Scotties Advance to Divisionals

Scotties Take Fourth at Districts

The Glasgow Scotties boys basketball team will advance to the divisional tournament in Malta on Feb. 27, 28 and 29. The Scotties beat out Poplar on Feb. 20 in the play-in game before falling to Harlem on Feb. 21 and Malta on Feb. 22, to claim fourth overall.

The boys beat Poplar 42 to 36. The first quarter came off with a horse race and ended after a single lead change with a tie of nine to nine. In the second the Scotties claimed the lead and continued advancing to end the half ahead by six with a score of 20 to 14. Poplar launched a comeback attempt in the third but failed to close the gap and take the lead. They ended the quarter having scored 14 points and holding the Scotties to 10, entering the fourth with a score of Glasgow 30 and Poplar 28. The fourth quarter found the Scotties back on top, as they scored 12 points in the final period against Poplar's eight and ended it 42 to 36.

Tim Wageman ended the game with the most points for the Scotties scoring 18. Keigan Skolrud followed with 13 and Saul Hansen followed him up with six. Kobe Sibley scored three and Alec Boland scored two to round off the Scottie scorers. The Scotties made 16 of 51 shots on the basket for an average of 31.4 percent. They would also make seven of 14 free throws for a 50 percent success rate from the line.

On day two, the Scottie boys took on the Harlem Wildcats for a shot at the finals, but fell in a high-scoring game 60 to 75. The Wildcats came out on a mission and took the lead early to never surrender their position. They ended the first quarter ahead by 14 points-24 to 10. In the second quarter the Scotties fought to even things up and put up 16 points to the Wildcats 17 to keep it steady at a 15-point game going into half-time.

The third quarter found the Scotties outscoring the Wildcats 18 to 16 and ended the quarter with a score of 44 to 57. In the fourth quarter, however, the Wildcats would reverse the effects of the third and put up 18 points to the Scotties 16 to keep it a 15 point game and make the final score Glasgow 60, Harlem 75.

Skolrud led the team in points with 25. He was followed by Wageman with 12 points. Sibley and Boland scored nine points each and Trevor Klind put up five. The Scotties took 57 shots from the floor and made 22 for an average of 38.6 percent. At the line they shot 12 for 21 giving them an average of 57.1 percent.

The loss to Harlem put the Scotties into the consolation finals against the Malta Mustangs. The first quarter proved brutal for the Scotties with Malta claiming a commanding lead at 15 to 3. The Scotties would break the Mustang momentum in the second quarter and go point for point with the Mustangs, each scoring seven to close out the half at Malta, 22 and Glasgow, 10. In the third the Scotties would push back against the Mustangs, outscoring Malta by seven points and ending the quarter at 26 points to Malta's 31. The fourth quarter, however, would not go the Scotties' way and they would give up 15 points to the Mustangs, while racking up 10. The final score would go to Malta with 46 to Glasgow's 36.

Skolrud again led the team in points with 13. He was followed by Boland with 10, Klind with eight, Wageman with three and Sibley with two. The Scotties shot and made 12 of 32 attempts on the basket for an average of 33.3 percent from the floor. At the free-throw line they went nine for 16 for an average of 56.3 percent.
