Scottie Boys Wrangle Mavs, Fall to Eagles

The Glasgow Scotties boys faced off agains the North Country Mavericks on Jan. 24 in front of a lively home crowd and ended up on top with a final score of 58 to 43. It is the second time the Mavs and Scotties have met on the court but in that match up the Mavs came out on top. The thrill of the revenge win was short lived however, as the Scotties hit the road the next day to face the Eagles losing by a 20-point margin, 52 to 32.

Against North Country, Scottie head coach Paul Yoakam said, "Our guards played really well moving the ball from one side of the court to the other which allowed [Keigan] Skolrud to position himself for easy baskets. Defensively, we nearly played 32 minutes of focused, team defense. North Country is a very patient team and we held pretty tough through their long possessions."

That defense was coupled by some solid performances from Skolrud who amassed a startling 35 of the Scotties total points by playing inside ball against a Mavs zone defense, assisted often by Vincent Chappell who managed to either find the basket or Skolrud for the assist. Chappell racked up the team's second highest score with eight. Seniors Alec Boland put up seven and Kobe Sibley put up six. Rounding off the Scottie score list was Trevor Klind with two points.

The Eagles were a different team entirely and managed to shut the Scottie offense down by holding Skolrud to a relatively low 14 points. That, coupled with the fact that they shot for 50 percent inside the perimeter compared to the Scotties' 24 percent, the Eagles were able to pull away and never look back. In all, the Scotties made 11 of 45 attempts from inside the three-point line, they made three of 16 from outside the line and sank seven of 12 from the free-throw line.

Discussing the game against Sidney, Yoakam said, "We played well as a team the first half. We had trouble getting a basket to go down but kept ourselves in the game defensively until the third quarter."

The Scotties will travel to Poplar on Jan. 30 and then host Glendive at home on Jan. 31.
