Scottie Girls Take Two

Defeat Conference Rivals

The Glasgow girls’ basketball team logged two victories over the weekend, defeating Malta on Friday night and turning around on Saturday to take down the Wolf Point Wolves. Glasgow, on home court, racked up 56 points to Malta’s 40. On the road in Wolf Point, they notched a 60-42 win over the Wolves.

On Friday night, the hoopsters leapt out to an early lead in the first quarter, powered by Keely Fossum’s seven points and Taylor Pederson’s five. The Scotties started the second quarter with a 19-5 lead over the M-ettes. Malta fought back, sinking 16 points before halftime, led by Addy Anderson who put up seven points. Glasgow slowed down, putting up 11 points in the quarter to give them the nine-point lead at the end of the first half.

Malta powered up in the third quarter, again outscoring Glasgow, 16-10, to put them within three points, 40-37. Malta had five players sink shots while holding Glasgow to just three players putting points on the scoreboard. The Scotties rebounded in the final quarter, taking advantage of Malta’s foul trouble and sinking eight free throws, accounting for half of their 16 fourth-quarter points. In turn, Glasgow held the visitors to a single three-pointer from Kylee Nelson.

Pederson led the Scotties in scoring, putting up 16 points, going 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Tyannn Graham contributed 14 points, draining three from the perimeter. Anika Peters added 10, Laura Ross 8, Fossum 7, and Davyn Myrick 1. Glasgow stayed out of foul trouble with Peters and Ross registering three fouls each.

Saturday the Scotties leapt out to an early lead in the first quarter, 9-5, and did not let up. Pederson and Ross registered Glasgow’s points in the first quarter, including three free throws from Pederson. Both teams stepped up in the second period as Glasgow added 15 to their side of the scoreboard while Wolf Point scored 10, making the score 25-15 going into the half. Fossum, Peters, Graham, Abrianna Nielson, and Ross all scored field goals for the Scotties in a balanced quarter.

The Scotties again took advantage of their opponents’ foul trouble in the second, sinking five from the line in the third quarter and six in the final quarter. Glasgow outscored Wolf Point 19-11 in the third, taking a dominant 44-26 lead in the game. Ross led the girls with seven points and Nielson added six.

Battling back, the Wolves kept pace with the Scotties in the fourth, each team putting up 16 points, but it was not enough for the hosts to overcome their deficit. Fossum powered the Scotties with 10 points, including four from the free throw line, in the 60-42 win.

Ross and Fossum led the team in scoring with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Nielson added 10, Pederson 9, Peters 5, Graham and Riley Noser 3 each, and Blaire Westby 1.

The Scotties host the North Country Mavericks this Friday, Jan. 24, and travel to Sidney on Saturday, Jan. 25.
