Lustre Lions Boys Claim Home Court Victory Against Mavs

Boys and Girls Keep Game Close Against Dodson

The Lustre Lions hosted the North Country Mavericks on Jan. 17 where both the girls’ and boys’ team tried to claim a home victory. The boys clinched the win 53 to 43 however the girls fell short with a final score of 52-14.

On the girls’ side, the Lions could not overcome the Mavericks’ pressure defense or close the early lead gap. The Lions ended the half with only four points on the board, courtesy of Amber Reddig’s two-pointer and two completed free-throw attempts by Alexa Reddig. The second half saw a little more action from the Lions with a two-pointer by Alexa in the third-quarter and two three-pointers and one two-pointer by Tiara Whitmus in the fourth quarter. “We struggled with clock management. Our defense stepped up in the game after the first quarter, but we saw the need to continue working on offensive movement and getting the best pass/shot,” said Lions coach Gretchen Schiller.

As a result of Whitmus’ three-pointers, she claimed the top scorer spot with eight total points followed by Alexa Reddig with four and Amber Reddig with two for the Lions. On the Maverick side, Kaitlyn McColly led the team with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals, followed by Kia Wasson with seven points and five assists. “We are continuing to put the pressure on the girls to rebound harder and they did a nice job at that this weekend,” stated Maverick coach Amber Erickson.

The boys’ side saw more action on both sides of the court as the game progressed. The Lions gained an early lead in the first quarter, courtesy of Kaleb Hoversland, Kolden Hoversland, Kyle Pederson and Terry Allmer all sinking baskets making the score at the end of the quarter 16 to 9. The Mavericks tried to close the gap, courtesy of JonRay Taylor, Loden Idler and Beau Simonson, scoring 12 points to the Lions’ 15. The second half saw back and forth action, however neither team outscored the other, with both teams scoring 22 points between the third and fourth quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Mavericks took advantage of free-throw attempts to try and close the gap sinking six of the seven attempts, while the Lions were provided 12 free-throw attempts, only sinking five of them. The lack of free-throws made didn’t hurt the Lions however, as they came out victorious.

Top scorers for the Lions included Kolden with 17 points and Allmer with 14 points. “Kolden led us in the North Country game with aggressive drives and getting the offense going,” said coach Randy Reddig. Leading the Mavericks were Idler with 16 points and Simonson with 12 points.

Following their home game, the Lions traveled to Dodson to play the Coyotes on Jan. 18 where the girls narrowly lost 43-42 and the boys lost by a bigger margin, 39-28. The girls’ side saw more offensive movements, scoring triple the amount of points from the game against the Mavericks the day before. “We came out from the get-go with decent offensive movement and saw the difference it made,” said coach Schiller. Amber Reddig led the team with 13 points followed by Alexa Reddig with 12 points. “This past weekend we shot much better from the line, with Aubri Holzrichter leading the way with making 100 percent,” said Schiller.

The boys’ side saw Dodson gain the early lead scoring 16 points compared to the Lions’ nine in the first half. That gap couldn’t be closed as Dodson scored 23 points in the second half, 17 of those in the fourth quarter, compared to the Lions’ 19 points over the half. “We had too many turnovers down the stretch in the Dodson game. It was a one point game in the fourth game and we hurt ourselves with some mental errors,” said coach Reddig. Kaleb Hoversland led the team with eight points followed by Allmer, Pederson and Kaleb Hoversland with six points each.

The Lustre Lions will host the Nashua Porcupines on Jan. 24 and then travel to Culbertson on Jan. 25.
