Scottie Boys and Girls Face Tough Week on the Court

Fall to Harlem and Scobey

The Glasgow Scotties boys and girls basketball teams faced two tough match ups last week. The first on Jan. 10 in Harlem pitted the Scotties against the Wildcats and then in Glasgow on Jan. 11 the Scotties took on the Scobey Spartans. The Scottie girls fell to the Wildcats by a margin of 17 finishing off the Friday night game with a score of 43 to Harlem's 60. On Saturday night the girls faced off against the Spartans on their home court and lost 29 to 52.

Lady Scotties head coach Travis Nielsen described the games as "tough" and added, "but we learned so much from both. We came into practice [this week] with great attitudes and the girls are getting ready for this tough weekend."

On Friday the Scotties battled an uphill fight the entire game ending the first quarter behind by 12 and never gained the lead. By the end of the first half the Scotties had added 11 points but given up 13 to put the Wildcats up 34 to 20. In the third quarter the Scotties were unable to keep pace and managed to score only seven points to make it Scotties 27 and Wildcats 47. Not giving up in the fourth quarter the Scotties managed to put up more points than Harlem with 16 compared to the Wildcats 13, but it would not be enough to close the massive gap between the two teams. The Scotties would lose 60 to 43 against Harlem.

Taylor Pedersen led the team in points with 20, all from within the perimeter and pulling off six of eight from the free-throw line. Tyann Graham followed with 14 points, 12 of which were from field goal range and two from within the perimeter. Rounding off the Scottie scorers three points each went to Keely Fossum, Anika Peters and Abrianna Nielsen.

The Scottie girls would fare no better on their home court against Scobey on Saturday. The Lady Scotties fell behind by only eight points in the first quarter, but did not manage to reclaim ground against the Spartans as the game progressed. They finished out the half in the same spot, down by eight, with a score of Spartans 27 and Scotties 19. In the third quarter the Spartans would shut down the Scotties offense by holding them to four points. At the same time the Spartans ran for 11 total points to make the score 38 to 23. The fourth quarter would see the Spartans giving up little ground as they again held the Scotties to single digits (six points) but put up 14 of their own. The game ended with Scobey on top 52 to 29.

Leading the Scotties in points was Keely Fossum with sixpoints. Tyann Graham followed with five points and Laura Ross put up four points. Daley Aune managed to make three of six free throws to rack up three points. Two points each went to Anika Peters, Abrianna Nielsen, Taylor Pederson and Blaire Westby.

Scottie Boys:

The Scottie boys also had a tough weekend against Harlem and Scobey. On Friday the boys fell to the Wildcats by what can only be described as a crushing margin. Harlem managed to outscore the Scotties by 30 points finishing the game with 74 to the Scotties 44.

Scottie boys head coach Paul Yoakam described last week as the "toughest weekend on the schedule for us" while discussing the losses to Harlem and Scobey both. He went on to add that, "We were a little worried about the pressure both Harlem and Scobey can put on our guards going into the weekend. I thought we attacked their pressure quite well but came up short on the opportunities that came out of it."

In the end though, Harlem managed to drain 15 from outside the perimeter compared to the Scotties who managed to only drain one of six from behind the three-point line. Dominating the night in points for the Scotties was again Kiegan Skolrud who put up seven of 13 baskets, drained 10 of 14 from the free throw line and racked up a total of 24 points. Also scoring for the Scotties was Alec Boland with five points, and Tim Wageman and Kobe Sibley with four. Trevor Klind, Bergen Miller and Josh Turner put two on the board and Jace Nickels put up one from the free throw line.

"Harlem shot the lights out," said Yoakam. "For two straight games we gave up 15 threes. Trevor was able to hold their top scorer to six points but the rest of their team shot very well. Skolrud had another big night, going for 24 and 13 boards."

Against Scobey the Scottie boys fared better on their home court but it still was not enough to pull off a win against the Spartans. The Scotties lost 56 to Scobey's 62, a margin of only six points. The Scotties fell behind in the first quarter by nine points scoring only half of what the Spartans managed with a quarter score of 18 to nine. That trend continued in the second quarter with Scobey putting up 11 and Glasgow putting up nine points to make it 18 to 29. In the third quarter the Scotties would more than double their points, putting up 19 total against Scobey's 11 and making the game a close 40 to 37 with Scobey ahead by three. In the fourth quarter the battle continued as the Scotties again banked 19 points, but the Spartans managed to outshoot Glasgow by one point to add 22 to the score board. The final result was Scobey up by six points with a score of 62 to 56.

"Going into the Scobey game we were focused on limiting turnovers and creating opportunities out of their full court pressure," explained Yoakam. "It was great to see our boys being aggressive offensively against a team as good as Scobey. We had our share of mistakes during the game but played through them, kept it close, and gained a lot of needed experience against a good team."

Skolrud had another extraordinary performance putting up 25 total points. Sibley followed with an exceptional performance racking up 19 points. Wageman put nine on the books and three went to Klind.

The Scotties will take on Malta in the Scottie Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 17, and will head to Wolf Point on Saturday, Jan 18, to take on the Wolves.
