Lustre Lions Play Three Games Over Two Weeks

The Lustre Lions have seen plenty of court action the past few weeks, traveling to Bainville on Jan. 3 and hosting the Scobey Spartans on Jan. 7 as well as the Frazer Bearcubs on Jan. 11.

In the game against Bainville, the boys kept the point spread close, losing only by six with a final score of 44-50. The first half of the game saw back and forth action, with the Lions scoring eight points in the first quarter and 10 points in the second quarter, compared to Bainville's six and 11. The second half saw Bainville dominate scoring 13 points in the third and 20 points in the fourth, compared to the Lions seven and 19. Contributing to the team's points were Terry Allmer with 14 and Kaleb Hoversland with 11. " Hoversland provided an offensive spark for us this game, which was great to see. We just gave up too many threes to win the game," coach Randy Reddig tells the Courier.

The girls' side also saw back and forth action however the Lady Lions came up on top winning 39 to 34. Top scorers included Amber Reddig with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists as well as Alexa Reddig with 10 points, three assists and three steals. Other contributors to the win included Lily Short with three points and one rebound; Aubri Holzrichter with two assists and two steals; Grace Brown with one rebound and one steal; and Tiara Whitmus with five points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals. "We were very rusty coming off the break in the first half but by second half we were able to kick off the dust and play a completely different game," stated coach Gretchen Schiller. "There are always things that could be done differently but I think our largest nemesis was clock management. We spent more time on defense than on offense."

The next week the Lions hosted the Scobey Spartans on Jan. 7, where the boys lost 56 to 40 and the girls lost 48-17. On the boys' side, Kolden Hoversland led the team with 16 points followed by Kyle Pederson's eight, and Terry Allmer's six points and eight rebounds. "We had 20 turnovers which hurt us," stated coach Reddig for the Lions' loss.

Four days later the Lions hosted the Frazer Bearcubs where the boys notched a win 68 to 13. The Lions didn't play nice with their hosts, scoring nine points right away in the first quarter, compared to Frazer's two, courtesy of a two-pointer by John Hotomanie. The second quarter saw the Lions scoring 22 points, compared to Frazer's six points, courtesy of Blue Fettig and Jeese Fettig's two pointers and two free throws, one each from Keein Ackerman and Hotamanie. The second half didn't get any better for Frazer, only scoring two points in the third quarter and three points in the fourth quarter, compared to the Lions' 37 points over the half. "They were short-handed with a couple starters out," stated Lions' coach Reddig. "We had 15 assists as a team so it was good to see the ball move and get to the correct spots." Leading the Lions were Kaleb Hoversland with 14 points, and Kyle Pederson and Cayden Klatt with 11 points each. On the Bearcubs' side, Hotamanie led the team with six points followed by Ackerman who scored three points.

The girls' game saw a much closer game, with Frazer ultimately taking home the win, 51 to 49. The first half saw the teams battling it out with Lustre scoring 13 points in the first quarter and 14 points in the second quarter, compared to Frazer's 17 and five. The first half ended with a score 22-27 with Lustre leading. However, the third quarter saw Frazer putting in two-pointers and a three-pointer by Kaylandra St. Marks, allowing them to close the point spread. Lustre could not keep up, only scoring three two-pointers and two free-throws compared to the Bearcubs' six two-pointers, one three-pointer and one attempted, and successfully made, free-throw. The fourth quarter saw more action on the free-throw line from the Lions, while the Bearcubs saw more success with their two-pointers. Top-scorers for the Lions included Alexa Reddig and Amber Reddig with 15 points each, while top-scorers for the Bearcubs included St. Marks with 22 points and Kaydin Sibley with 21 points.

The Lustre Lions will host North Country on Friday, Jan.17 while the Bearcubs will host Dodson and then travel to Saco on Jan. 18.
