Mavericks Dominate Porcupines' Home Court

The Nashua Porcupines hosted the North Country Mavericks on Jan. 3 in the Nashua gym. The boys' game saw lots of back and forth action starting in the second quarter, however the Porcupines couldn't catch up, losing 48-60. The girls' side saw more one-sided action from the Lady Mavs who outscored the Lady Porcupines, 59-18.

The boys game saw the Mavericks dominate the first quarter with 23 points compared to Nashua's two, achieved by Mack Winchester's two-pointer. The second quarter saw more action from the Porcupines, keeping the game competitive, achieving 14 points compared to the Mavs' 10. Nashua had many attempts at the free-throw line, sinking five of the 10 attempts during the quarter. The second half of the game continued to see the competitiveness between the two teams, with the Porcupines scoring 14 points in the third quarter and 18 points in the fourth quarter, compared to the Mavericks' 15 and 12. Each team had 23 free-throw attempts, while the Porcupines sunk 11 of those and the Mavs sunk 13. Foul trouble seemed to follow both teams, however as the Porcupines got more aggressive shown by Winchester and Fletcher Clampitt being fouled out due to committing five personal fouls each. Mavs players Jesse Lee, Trey Johnson and Brady Albus came close to fouling out, committing four each. Top scorers for the Mavs included Beau Simonson with 16 points and JonRey Taylor with 10 while Ethan Viste (10 points), Sawyer Sibley (eight points) and Dillon Yoss (eight points) contributed for the Porcupines.

The girls game saw little action from the Lady Porcupines, as they couldn't keep up with the Lady Mavs' offense or defense. The Mavs started the game off with 21 points in the first quarter, compared to Nashua's two. The second quarter didn't see much better action, with the Mavs scoring 17 points compared to Nashua's six, which was contributed by Tia Dees and Kailyn Miller. The second half continued to see the Lady Porcupines struggle, only scoring two points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth quarter, compared to the Lady Mavs total of 21 points over the two quarters. The Lady Porcupines were able to sink six of their eight free-throw attempts, while the Lady Mavs were only able to sink 10 of their 29. Assisting with providing the Mavs free-throw attempts was Porcupine's Miller, who fouled out of the game, and Devin Fromdahl, who committed four personal fouls. Top scorers for the Lady Mavs included Elise Strommen with 15 points, Kia Wasson with 13 and Kaitlyn McColly with 12. Helping the Porcupines get on the board were Tia Dees who achieved 12 points, while Miller, Fromdahl and Kyleigh Garsjo achieved two points.

After the disappointing losses, the Porcupines traveled to Dodson, where the boys lost 70-32, and the girls lost 61-22.

The Porcupines will host Frazer on Friday, Jan. 10, with girls varsity action starting at 6 p.m. followed by boys varsity action at 7:30 p.m. Following the game, the teams will travel to Circle on Saturday, Jan. 11, with varsity girls action starting at 6 p.m. and varsity boys action starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Mavericks will travel to Scobey to play on Friday, Jan. 10, and Whitewater to play Dodson on Saturday, Jan. 11.
