High School Ice Dawgs Compete in Kalispell Winter Classic

The Glasgow Ice Dawgs High School girls team traveled to Kalispell over the Christmas break to compete in the 19U Girls Winter Classic tournament. Glasgow went up against some tough teams from Bozeman, Missoula and Flathead in their four games of play, walking away from the tournament with one tie and three losses.

Glasgow first faced off against the Icedogs of Bozeman Dec. 27. The Ice Dawgs jumped out to a 3-2 goal lead in the first period. Halle Hunter, assisted by Tatum Provencher, netted the first goal of the game at 12:20 but Bozeman was quick to answer back with a goal from Alex Chisdak.

The Ice Dawgs took all of 14 seconds to regain the lead on a goal from Kylie Lagerquist, with an assist from Ava Lloyd. Chisdak tied it for Bozeman at 9:32, but Shanice Lagerquist found the back of the net for the Dawgs with just 1:12 left in the period. Elizabeth Nyquist faced 14 shots while Glasgow put nine on the Bozeman netminder.

S. Lagerquiest got the Dawgs on the board with the insurance goal at 11:10 in the second period with the assist from Provencher. Bozeman battled back though, adding two goals before the end of the period to put the score at four even. The Icedogs put up 25 shots compared to Glasgow’s three in the second period. S. Lagerquist also spent two minutes in the sin bin as the two teams served matching penalties for cross checking.

The score at intermission stood through the third period of play, even as Bozeman had Nyquist standing on her head. The Ice Dawgs netminder faced an additional 18 shots in the final period, bringing the total SOGs to 57 in the game, earning her the MVP award and the game puck.

On Saturday morning, Glasgow saw a tough game against Missoula, falling 6-0 when the final buzzer sounded. The Lady Bruins jumped out to a three goal lead in the first period and netted another three in the second. Missoula owned the puck throughout the game putting up a total of 59 shots on net, compared to Glasgow’s six. Nyquist again took the MVP honors, with an 89.8 save percentage.

Mayme Collins sat two minutes for tripping in the first. Emma Cook served two two-minute penalties, one in the first period for hooking and one in the second for roughing. S. Lagerquist was sent to the sin bin in the third period for tripping.

The Ice Dawgs returned to the ice that evening to take on the hosts, Flathead Fusion. Glasgow came out strong, taking a 3-0 lead to end the first, but could not stand under the onslaught of shots from Flathead, ultimately losing 6-4.

Lloyd got the Dawgs going in the first period, finding the back of the net with an assist from K. Lagerquist. Collins, assist Provencher, made it 2-0 and S. Laqerquist took the Dawgs to three goals with help from Collins. The Dawgs scored three times on five shots in the period.

Flathead took control of the game in the second, finding the back of the net five times. Glasgow added a goal when Tori Pehlke assisted on a shot from Cook. The second period ended with the Ice Dawgs down, 5-4, to the Fusion. The home team added a single goal in the last period giving them the 6-4 victory.

Provencher served penalties for slashing, first period, and tripping, second period. In the third period, Kimber Dulaney went to the box for tripping and Collins sat for slashing. Nyquist faced a total of 41 shots as her teammates registered 11 through the game. S. Lagerquiest was awarded top honors and the game puck as MVP.

Sunday morning, the Ice Dawgs faced off against the Icedogs for third place. The Icedogs jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first and held on to win the game 7-3. Provencher put the Dawgs on the big board in the first period, unassisted. Collins added a goal in the second, with an assist from S. Lagerquist, and in the third, with help from Pehlke.

The Dawgs put up four shots on goal each period for a game total of 12, while Nyquist faced 37 over three periods of play. Lloyd was sent to the penalty box in the first period for tripping, in an otherwise clean game for Glasgow. Provencher was awarded the game puck and MVP status for her efforts for Glasgow.

The 19U Ice Dawgs will be in Havre this upcoming weekend, Jan. 10-12, and the following weekend, Jan. 18-19.
