Glasgow Ice Dawgs HS Teams Starts Season in Sidney

Win One, Lose Three

The Glasgow Ice Dawgs high school boys started their season in Sidney, Dec. 6 through 8, after their scheduled games in Havre the weekend before had been canceled since the Ice Hawks did not have a goalie for the weekend of play.

The Dawgs faced off against the hosts in their first game, falling to Richland 8-4. Glasgow jumped out to a two goal lead in the first. Isaac Braaten notched the first goal, with an assist from Michael Hoyer. Braaten again placed the Dawgs on the board, with assists by Ian Peterson and Colter Barnett. The lead didn’t last long however as Richland tied it up before the buzzer signaled the end of the period.

Momentum wasn’t gained in the second for the Dawgs as Nick Burke scored the only goal in the second period, with the assist from Gage Siefert. Richland ended up logging three goals before the intermission, taking a 5-3 lead into the break. Richland held on to their momentum, putting three goals on the board in the third, to Glasgow’s one. Braaten scored the hat trick with the assist from Barnett with under a minute to play.

Brayden Hansen was in the net for the Dawgs and faced 45 shots in the game for the 82 save percentage. Ian Peterson, Hoyer and Braaten spent time in the penalty box for Glasgow during the game.

In an early morning game on Dec. 7, the Ice Dawgs fell to Milestone, 4-1. Glasgow’s Trevor Johnson scored the lone goal of the game with the assist from Braaten in the third. Milestone outshot Glasgow over 48 minutes of play, 29 to 21. The Dawgs logged two penalties in the game, Braaten for tripping and the bench for too many men.

Glasgow bounced back for their third game, dominating Crosby in a 12-2 win. The Ice Dawgs leapt out to a 4-1 lead in the first period, outshooting Crosby 13-10. Hoyer got the Dawgs on the board first, followed by a goal from Braaten. Barnett notched the third goal with assists from Burge and Bailey Hansen. Braaten scored the fourth with the assist from Samuel Knierim.

The Ice Dawgs took total control in the second period, scoring five goals on 10 shots, while holding the Comets to only six shots and no goals. Siefert kicked of the scoring spree with a short-handed goal assisted by Barnett. Burke and Hoyer assisted Bailey Hansen on the Dawgs’ sixth goal of the game. Hoyer notched the next goal with Braaten and Siefert getting credit for the assists. Braaten, assisted by Barnett, put the Dawgs up on the board for the fourth time in the period, and for the fifth time, unassisted.

Crosby got on the board first in the third period, but the Dawgs regained momentum, scoring three more goals to secure the win. Johnson found the back of the net first, followed by Koby Regalado who was assisted by Barnett on goal number 11 for Glasgow. Burke rounded out the scoring for the Dawgs with an assist from Barnett. Crosby outshot Glasgow, 33-26, but Brayden Hansen turned away 31 of those shots to help the Dawgs win.

The fourth and final game for the Ice Dawgs in Sidney was against Watford City, Dec. 8. The Oilers got on the board first, but Barnett, assisted by Braaten tied it up. Watford City took the lead again, but Hoyer answered, unassisted, ending the first period in a 2-2 tie.

The Dawgs came out in a big way in the second, getting the puck past the Oilers’ net-minder five times in 16 minutes of play. Braaten found the net in the first minute of play, followed by Burke with the assist from Siefert. Barnett notched the third goal of the period with Braaten in the assist column. Barnett and Braaten teamed up again for the next goal, with help from Peterson. Braaten, with Barnett and Peterson, finished off the scoring for the Dawgs, as they took a 7-4 lead into the third period.

Watford City roared back in the third, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game and take it in to overtime. The extra period was short and not-so-sweet for the Dawgs, as the Oilers slipped one past Glasgow goalie, AIden Wilkowski, earning the 8-7 win. Wilkowski faced just two more shots than the Oilers’ goalie in the contest, 31-29. Glasgow took 7 penalties to Watford City’s three, with Hoyer, Barnett, Peterson, and Burke spending time in the sin bin.

The Ice Dawgs host the Billings Bulls this weekend, Friday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m., at the Valley Event Center.
