Cougars Shock Scotties

End Hopes for Championship Berth

The Glasgow Scotties’ hopes for making a state championship appearance were dashed in Columbus Nov. 2 when Columbus took the victory 28-24. Even though it wasn’t the outcome they were hoping, the Scottie seniors still took their final walk on Columbus’ turf.

Turnovers, combined with Columbus converting on those mistakes, seemed to be the undoing of the Scotties. After a first half of defensive domination, Glasgow could not claw their way back to controlling the game in the second half. Scottie mistakes, including two interceptions in the first, swung momentum to the home team in a rollercoaster turn of events after halftime.

Dexter Monson logged his seventh interception in his final season as a Scottie as Columbus’ defensive lines owned the play in the first quarter. However, neither team was able to put points up on the scoreboard.

The only scoring in the second came from junior Jesse Lee, as he pushed through the center of the Cougars defense for the first touchdown of the game. His two-point conversion gave Glasgow the 8-0 lead, which would hold through halftime.

The momentum of the game took a drastic shift as sophomore Nik Burke fumbled the kickoff return to start the second half. The Cougars recovered and made good on their possession, with Trey Johannes driving the ball into the end zone from four yards out. A successful two-point conversion tied the game at 8-8.

The Scotties answered not long after to retake the lead, 16-8. After a run by Alec Boland and a penalty on the defense, Lee took two carries to set up the Scotties just outside the end zone. Boland did what he does best, running in the ball from a yard out and adding on another run for two.

The Cougars roared back to close out the third quarter when a penalty on a Scottie punt put the home team in excellent scoring position. Johannes maneuvered his way through the white jerseys to carry the ball over the line from five yards out. The Columbus sophomore added the extra two to tied the game at 16.

The Scotties fumbled again on the kick-off return, turning the ball back over to the Cougars, setting up the start of the fourth quarter with Glasgow back on defense. Johannes took advantage of Columbus’ possession, notching another touchdown. Glasgow’s defense blocked the point-after-touchdown kick and the scoreboard read 22-16 for the home team.

Glasgow then took possession of the ball and went to 10 yards out from the red line. Lee muscled it in to claim his third touchdown of the day. Boland added the extra two, keeping the ball and running in to put Glasgow up, 24 to 22 with just over six minutes left on the clock.

However, No. 9 ranked Columbus was not ready to cede the victory to No. 10 Glasgow. After five minutes of play, Johannes was back in the home team’s end zone, getting the pigskin in from a yard out. Columbus reclaimed the lead 28-24. The fourth touchdown from the sophomore standout sealed the win for the Cougars, who ran the clock out, ending Glasgow’s season.
