Scotties Shut Down Wolves

Turn Eyes Towards Eagles

The Glasgow Scottie football team found their footing under the Friday night lights in Wolf Point on Oct. 18. While the offense racked up 58 points, the defense shut out the Wolves in the 80th meeting between the two teams. "They all played a good game, top to bottom," said coach Patrick Barnett of the boys in red and white.

Glasgow lit up the scoreboard early in the first quarter as Alec Boland and Jesse Lee marched the ball down the field. Boland carried it across the goal line, which was followed up with a two-point run, putting the Scotties up 8-0. Lee found the end zone again, running in from 19 yards to give Glasgow another six points. The first quarter ended with the Scotties up 14-0, after a failed two-point conversion.

Up next was Loden Idler with a 10-yard run for the touchdown and a successful run for the additional two points, putting the Scotties up 30-0 in the second. Scoring in the first half was capped off for the Scotties when Tel Aune snagged a 10-yard pass. Without the extra two points, Glasgow took a lead of 38-0 going into the locker room at half time.

Glasgow continued their domination in the third when Boland ran the ball in from 19 yards out and Kristian Price grabbed the pigskin to tack on two more points, 46-0. In the fourth quarter, Idler notched two more touchdowns, giving him three total on the stat sheet. Both attempts at the extra two points failed, and the Scotties ended the game with decisive victory, 58-0.

Barnett told the Courier, "We overpowered them in every aspect of the game." The Scotties' defense saw only 30 plays as their offensive teammates owned the field. Barnett was quick to credit his offensive line with their crucial role in the win, saying the Scotties were able to average 10 yards a carry. "If we can block like that, no team should be able to stop us," he explained.

According to the second-year head coach, the defense also had "a stellar game." After a disappointing two losses in a row, he said, "This was a good game to get back on track."

The win comes as the Scotties prepare to face the number-one ranked Fairfield Eagles on their home turf this Friday night. Fairfield is coming off a 34-0 win over neighboring Malta, ending the Mustangs' unbeaten streak. Barnett is planning to focus on the Scotties' passing game, both offensively and defensively, in their quest to secure the final win in the regular season, noting on the KLTZ Saturday Morning Sports Show that Fairfield likes to pass the ball.

Acknowledging the need to prepare as much mentally as physically, Barnett said, "We need to out-execute them, to take advantage of their mistakes." The Northern B Conference Championship presents several potential outcomes which will determine the Scotties playoff positioning.

Glasgow's athletic director Brenner Flaten outlined the possibilities as reported by KLTZ on their Facebook page: A Glasgow win by 11 points or more would secure the conference title and home field advantage for the playoffs; a Glasgow win by three to 10 points would give the Scotties a second-place finish and one home playoff game; a Glasgow loss or a win by two points or less would bring the Scotties to third place, which would mean a first-round playoff game against the second-place team from the Southern B conference.

Coach Barnett says while, "it's just another game," he is planning to, "play a well-fought football game." This Friday night's game activities will begin at 6:40 p.m. as senior Scotties are honored prior to kickoff at 7 p.m.
