Scottie Boys and Girls Harriers Take First in Plentywood

Short Course Scratches Times, Race Will Count

Both the Glasgow Scottie Cross Country Boys and Girls teams claimed first at the Plentywood Invitational on Oct. 12. Cold and wet weather forced the hosts to move the course from its traditional route on the golf course to the surface streets of Plentywood. The short-notice relocation caused a miscalculation in the course’s length, however, and what should have been 3.11 miles ended up being 2.8 miles long. As a result, the times were staggeringly fast, but they would not count for the record. Head Coach Rod Karst did say that the race would count as a valid competition counting towards the minimum number of races to qualify for State, but that the times would not qualify any runners for state or letters.

The short course did not deter the Scotties from being happy with their first place wins. Blake Lloyd, speaking for the boys team, said he still thought the race went pretty well all things considered. “It was pretty cold, but the course was short so the times were good,” said Lloyd. “But I think we did pretty good.”

Shanice Lagerquist was also happy with the girls’ first place finish on the teams' side. Lagerquist told the Courier, “The course wasn’t super hilly, but it was super cold so we were all running in our hats, gloves and sweatshirts, but I think everyone did really good.” She is looking forward to the last official meet of the year scheduled in Culbertson on Saturday, Oct. 19. “I’m looking forward to running this last meet as fast as I can and get a lettering time,” said Lagerquist.

The Scottie harrier seniors will be recognized before the Scottie volleyball match on Oct. 16 before running their last official race in Culbertson this weekend.
