St. Marie Women's Club Annual Pie Social Oct. 5

To raise funds for its Supporting Our Troops project, the St. Marie Women’s Club will host its annual pie social from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Town Hall in St. Marie.

On sale will be a range of culinary delights from chocolate crème, lemon meringue and pecan pies to homemade standards like apple, cherry and pumpkin that can only be topped if they have a dollop or two of ice cream.

“Long-time attendees have been known to enjoy a slice or three of their favorites,” said Troops Project coordinator Jackie Bird. “And it sure doesn’t hurt our feelings if they take some home. Slices are $2 each and a la modes, add a buck.” Whole pies may be available for sale.

Bird noted that proceeds from the Pie Social this year will go towards support for more than 400 Montana troops, including 106 members of the Montana Air National Guard currently serving far from home.

“In October, the Montana Army National Guard will be readying 300 troops to go support our interests abroad,” she said.

The goal of the Troops Project is to ensure deployed soliders – even soldiers from other states – receive care packages from home. “If we’ve got a name and address, we’ll send them a package,” said Bird.

Bird noted that as of the end of August, area support has funded 2,462 packages, costing $31,590.35 in postage. “We have shipped nearly 23,482 pounds of things they miss, want, or can just share,” she said.
