Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Two Rivers, Glasgow Downtown Association and the Glasgow Chamber have teamed up to provide a fun way to get over the mid-week slumps during the summer and early fall months. Every third Wednesday of the month through September, businesses and shoppers can get out to participate in Hump Day and Alive at Five.
The first Hump Day of the season was on June 19, followed by Alive at Five at Nemont Telephone that evening. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, those who attended Alive at Five had an unexpected surprise, rain. “When the event started, it down-poured, we wiped chairs and tables, everyone came by, and then it down-poured again! We again wiped down tables and chairs and everyone came back from inside. Even with the rain, everyone stuck around and we served 84 plates for dinner,” stated Glasgow Downtown Association member and local business owner Haylie Shipp.
The purpose of Hump Day and Alive at Five is two-fold, to get people out shopping and to remind people there is a downtown and getting people there. Hump Day has been around for three years, with local businesses offering flash sales or special sales for the day. For every Hump Day event this year, shoppers can bring their receipts to the Glasgow Chamber to be entered into a drawing for $50 in Chamber Big Bucks. “Receipts from certain businesses are eligible for the drawing. Bring in all of your receipts from your shopping on Hump Day, and the Chamber will be happy to sort through the eligible ones for you,” stated Shipp.
Following a day of working, spending time on the lake, shopping, or any other summer recreational activity, the Glasgow Downtown Association is providing “Alive at Five” in order to create an exposure to downtown. The event starts at 5 p.m., and music will start at 5:30 p.m., with the event wrapping up at 8 p.m. Each “Alive at Five” will be at a different location in order to create more exposure for not only the business but the area around the business.“The idea is to rotate locations in order to get people on every side street they might not normally get to,” stressed Shipp. In addition to different locations, each Alive at Five event will be different in the type of food that is served. “There will be different food at each event. Each Alive at Five will be similar in setup but all will be unique,” stated Shipp.
This month’s event will be on Wednesday, July 17, with music provided by Ben Miller and Rachel Sigmundstad at the Elks parking lot. In addition to live music, food and drinks, there will also be three sets of corn hole boards to allow those in attendance to compete against their friends or family. The Children’s Museum will also be offering a “Kid’s Night Out” for next Wednesday’s event and the Aug. 21 event, providing the opportunity for parents to not have to worry about getting a babysitter for the night. “If parents want, kids are certainly welcome to Alive at Five,” stressed Shipp.
Future events will be on Aug. 21 at the Busted Knuckle with Eugene’s Pizza as the food choice and live music provided by Seasons from Wolf Point. The Sept. 18 event will be at First Community Bank with live music by Fourth Street Band from Glasgow. “
