Kaiser, Sand Lead GKST to Third

Holiday Weekend Offers Rare Break

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) traveled to Plentywood for two days of competition June 29 and 30.

Although it wasn't the largest swim meet of the season so far, head coach Nicole Arnold noted that the meet was packed with serious competition from Scobey, Sidney and Plentywood. "Those teams were at full force with a majority of their swimmers in attendance."

Scobey and Sidney are powerhouses in the Eastern Federation with strong participation numbers, but Glasgow was able to secure a third-place finish with 33 athletes in attendance.

Leading the team with top-three finishes were Rachel Billingsley, Holt Huntsman, Trevor Johnson, Katie Kaiser, Abigail Kulczyk, Allie Palm, Dalton Sand, Haylly Turner and Aaron Zoanni. Kaiser and Sand also took high point honors in their respected age groups. This is Kaiser's third meet in a row earning high point and Sand's fourth.

Each week, the coaches choose an athlete to highlight for their efforts in the pool. This week, however, two individuals impressed the coaches and are being recognized for their performances: Haleigh Huntsman and Wade Fuhrman.

"Haleigh's performances this weekend stood out because she competed well both Saturday and Sunday," explained Arnold. "On Saturday, Haleigh set new personal records in all three individual races and shaved a total of 12.81 seconds. Sunday, Haleigh came back and yet again set new personal records in all her individual races. Haleigh not only excelled in her individual races but also on the two relays she swam for Glasgow. Haleigh may be on the bottom of her age group, but she is swimming with mental focus and determination well beyond her years. The GKST is very excited to see what this young lady can accomplish as the season progresses and she finds more confidence in her ability and technique."

Of Fuhrman, Arnold said, "Wade shocked the whole team as he started Saturday with a 23.5 second personal record in the 25 freestyle. His time was also fast enough to allow him to qualify in his first individual event ever with a 10th-place finish. Later that day, Wade shaved off another 28.1 seconds in his 25m backstroke putting him fourth going in to finals in that event. What makes Wade's swim meet so remarkable is that he crushed his personal best times that he set at the Glasgow swim meet only two weeks prior. Wade made huge improvements in just a short amount of time. The GKST family can't wait to see what is next for this up-and-coming, second-year swimmer."

Other noteworthy performances came from Damian Cable, who competed in the 200 IM for the first time ever. "The 200 IM arguably can be seen as one of the toughest races to swim as the individual must swim all four strokes correctly," explained Arnold of the task. "Damian was able to get through the grueling race and came out with a fifth-place finish for the team."

Finally, Arnold noted the accomplishments of first-year swimmers Heath and Kacie Hankins who continue to set new personal records in competition.

The GKST has just three more regular season meets to complete before the divisional meet in Scobey Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.

The team has an atypical break from competition this coming weekend as there are no meets scheduled.

Arnold expects the rare break will give the team some needed rest heading into their final month of training.

Following the break, the swimmers will be in Glendive Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14.
