Glasgow Clinic Welcomes Two FNPs

The Glasgow Clinic is pleased to announce two new family nurse practitioners to the Glasgow Clinic and the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital family. Christina Hartshorn, FNP, and Desiree Cavan, FNP, have started seeing patients for acute issues, such as fevers, colds, urinary tract infections, any issues that are short-term and not considered chronic, at the Glasgow Clinic.

Hartshorn has been with the clinic since April 28, and has been loving her time here in Glasgow. She decided on the "middle of nowhere" after first falling in love with rural healthcare during her last clinical rotation and then visiting Glasgow to interview for the position. "While interviewing, I fell in love with the town and the people," stated Hartshorn. Montana isn't new territory for her as she has a sister in Helena.

Her personal experiences with the healthcare field started when she got very sick as a young adult. During that phase of her life, she saw the good sides of health care but also experienced bad nurses. "I realized I could make a difference in the lives of others the way they made a difference in my life," recalled Hartshorn. She started off as a dialysis nurse for nine years before graduating from Perdue University with a 4.0 grade point average.

She decided to pursue being a family nurse practitioner after seeing patients on dialysis and their grief regarding their preventative condition. "When I was a dialysis nurse, it was heartbreaking to see the patients not realize their health condition resulted in their kidneys shutting down. I decided to get in front of and educate patients in taking care of themselves so they didn't end up on the other side," stated Hartshorn.

Cavan started at the clinic in the beginning of June and has also enjoyed the life of a small town. Glasgow was chosen to become home after her and her husband started looking for places to raise their four kids in a community lifestyle. "When you think of a classic small town, Glasgow fits the picture," stated Cavan. She is excited to learn more about the area and loves seeing the children of the community being outside and riding their bikes.

Cavan is not new to Montana as she grew up in Billings and moved from Belgrade. She attended MSU to obtain her nursing degree and graduated from Gonzaga with a degree in the summer of 2017. Her passion for healthcare started at the age of 11, when she first started volunteering at a local hospital. "When I started to volunteer, I realized I wanted to be a nurse," recalled Cavan. She achieved that dream, performed the role for 10 years and decided to move on, which motivated her to become a family nurse practitioner.
