Reds Flush Royals, Guttenberg Deals Shut-Out in Pair of Games

Glasgow Follows-Up with Two More Wins at Home vs. Malta

The Glasgow Reds earned two shut-outs on the diamond vs. the Malta Royals at home on June 19. Chase Guttenberg made a statement on the mound in the first game when he earned the win and a shut-out against the visitors. He went five innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out eight.

Additionally, the Reds' offense burned up the base paths with 12 runs in the first inning. They clinched the win with another run in the fourth inning and denied Malta any opportunities to score a run. The scoring streak for Glasgow began with singles by Darrin Wersal, Noah Lipszyc, Tel Aune, and Kristian Price, a walk by Kaden Fossum, a triple by Dylan Nieskens, a groundout by Bryce Legare, and a double by Aune.

Defensively, Glasgow executed a double play that shortened the first inning significantly when Fossum fielded a line drive into center and threw to Lipszyc for the out at first. Lipszyc threw to Aune behind the plate and with the help of Wersal, they denied a scoring run at home.

The second game was more of the same as Glasgow secured another shut-out against Malta, defeating the Royals 18-0 without committing a single error.

Offensively, the Reds were a powerhouse, driving in 18 runs on 17 hits. John Cremer led his team at the plate, going 3-for-3 and driving in five runs.

On the hill, three pitchers worked for the shut-out with JT Sprague earning the win. Sprague went three innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out two and walking one. Mark Eliason and Rance Rhoads entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

A pair of games originally scheduled to be played in Malta were held at Bill Connors Field on June 24. While the Reds earned another two wins, the Royals from Malta were able to put some runs on the board.

Glasgow began the game with two runs in the first inning and Malta responded by bringing two runs of their own across the plate. The Royals were unable to score for the remainder of the game, however, and Glasgow pulled steadily away for the 12-2 win.

The Reds' biggest inning was the third, with six runs put on the board. It was also a game heavy with stolen bases as Glasgow racked up 16 steals.

Kevin McDonald earned the win for the Reds. In 70 pitches, he allowed four hits and two runs over five innings, striking out 11 and walking one. Rhoads threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Fossum's bat was on fire for the second game as he notched six RBIs in the contest to lead the Reds to the win. He drove in runs on a double in the second, a single in the second, and a double in the third.

Cremer earned the victory on the hill for Glasgow. He surrendered two runs on three hits over four innings, striking out three and walking zero. Vinny Chappell closed out the game on the mound for Glasgow, pitching the final inning.
