Death on the Water

Man Found Dead Fishing Near Pines

Emmett T. Apel (56) was found dead in the water near the Pines Recreation Area in the early morning hours of June 4, according to Valley County Sheriff Tom Boyer. The Sheriff stated that the Wisconsin man – who owned a cabin at the Pines – had gone fishing on the shore the evening prior to his discovery.

Sheriff Boyer told the Courier that Apel’s wife drove her husband to his favorite fishing spot the night prior and had been waiting in the car for her husband while he fished. After some time, she decided to go look for him and was unable to find him. After the unsuccessful search on the shore, she assumed he had either walked to the cabin or slept on the shore per his earlier statement. She returned to the cabin and fell asleep.

The next morning, she went back to the water to look for him and found him dead. Law enforcement was notified, and the Sheriff’s Office responded to investigate. The preliminary autopsy report revealed that the cause of death was most likely drowning and a suspected accident. Toxicology results are pending.
