Reds Kick Off Season

Split Four Games vs. Glendive

The Glasgow Reds were defeated by the Glendive Blue Devils in their first game of the 2019 season, 7-3. The game was the first of a double header held at Bill Conners Field on June 1.

The Reds battled through some costly errors earlier in the game, but managed to steady their mitts for the remainder of the contest.

At the plate, Dylan Nieskens led the Reds with three hits in his four at-bats, including a double to center field in the bottom of the first inning. Tel Aune finished the fifth inning with a double to right field. Both Nieskens and Aune, however, were left on base and denied a trip to home.

In the field, the Blue Devils kept Kaden Fossum busy in center, as he secured five outs for Glasgow throughout the game. In the top of the fourth inning, with two Devils on base, Gavin Adkins and Kristian Price completed a double play with Adkins throwing from second to first. Despite the defensive maneuver, Glendive was able to send a runner home from third base to take the 4-3 lead over Glasgow.

Darrin Wersal took the loss on the mound for the Reds. He allowed three hits and four runs over three innings, striking out four. Wersal faced 19 batters and threw 77 pitches. Kevin McDonald provided relief on the mound, coming into the game in the fourth inning. He faced 18 batters, striking out one and tossing 62 pitches.

The Reds pulled off a 2-1 win over Glendive in the second game of the day, with Wersal scoring off an Aune RBI and Fossum scoring off a wild pitch. The Blue Devils' only run came at the top of the sixth inning.

Fossum led for Glasgow at the plate, going one-for-two. Price earned the victory on the pitcher's mound, surrendering one run on six hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking zero. He faced 29 batters and threw 88 pitches.

On June 2, the Reds traveled to Glendive for another double header, winning the first contest 16-14 and dropping the second 4-10.

Glasgow built a nine-run lead into the seventh inning, then successfully denied the Blue Devils' attempt at a comeback when they scored seven runs off a string of singles.

The Reds finished with 12 hits in their error-free run and Fossum led with four hits in his six turns at the plate. He recorded a double in the first and singles in the fourth, fifth and seventh. McDonald, Chase Guttenberg, and Vinny Chappell also managed multiple hits for Reds. McDonald singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs, and Guttenberg doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring three runs. Chappell recorded two hits, but was unable to bring in any runs.

John Cremer was the winning pitcher for the Reds, throwing 104 pitches and facing 31 batters. He allowed nine hits and seven runs over six innings, striking out one. Fossum threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. In that inning, he faced 12 batters with 36 pitches, striking out two.

In their second match-up, the Reds lost their offensive drive about halfway through the game and fell to Glendive 10-4.

Glasgow's four runs were scored off doubles. Logan Sinclair made it on base with a line drive double to right field and was brought home off another line drive double from Bryce Legare. In the fourth inning, with two runners on base, Nieskens sent a line drive double to center and scored both runners. Nieskens made it home on the next pitching series when Fossum hit a double to right field. McDonald executed a nice double play in the fifth when he wrangled a ground ball to get the two outs and end the inning. Fossum was the leading hitter for the Reds with his three hits in four at-bats.

Gavin Adkins took the loss on the bump for Glasgow. He allowed 11 hits and seven runs over four innings, striking out four. He tossed 90 pitches and faced 24 batters. Chappell and Cale Swanson provided relief, pitching an inning each.
