My Older Sister

Reflecting back, her life was indeed amazing. Upon her husband’s retirement, Hazel telephoned me and informed me that they were en-route to Oregon. Their only son resided close to Portland, Ore., and he had located a suitable home for his parents.

Hazel requested that I pray for her as she had symptoms of colon cancer.

Her oncologist confirmed her suspicion. Radiation was recommended and as she related to me, “I received one treatment, walking away I turned to the nurse and said “I’m leaving and never coming back!” The nurse replied, “Oh, you are going to beat it, Mrs. Keeney – you are a positive thinker!”

Hazel was given three months to live. She considered radiation an obstacle to her healing. Dietary changes were made such as: no white flour nor white sugar. Lovers of macaroni; that was deleted from her menu. Never pop (soda) of any type nor alcoholic beverages.

Hospital calls were received, “Mrs. Keeney, if you don’t answer us, how can we help you?” Hazel would tell the truth - “I’m getting along just fine, thank you.”

One important addition: Hazel had learned of the beneficial results of barley green, the dried juice from young barley leaves. (Thanks goes to Japanese doctor, Dr. Hagiwara).

Hazel lived 14 years after the diagnosis. Yes, I’ll repeat that, 14 years!

Hazel was my older sister. God rest her soul!
