A Shout Out to High School Students

Dear Editor,

Being around high school students can teach one many valuable lessons. As adults, we often dwell on the mistakes of the youth and the poor choices they make. However, let's take a step back and view the wholesomeness, compassion, and the genuine concern these students have for others.

On May 2, I was fortunate to take students down to the Glasgow track field to help with the Special Olympics Track Meet. Mr. Karst designed jobs for each student, and without trepidation, they unselfishly began to work with the Special Olympians.

With pride and desire, the Glasgow students took the reluctant participants' hands and walked with them around the track, cheered on the athletes from the sidelines, or timed the various events. A few students volunteered their time to take pictures of this special event. While other students promised these young track advocates they would play "Bocce" ball with them. If you could have witnessed the smiles on these young people, both the Olympians and the helpers your heart would have burst with pride.

I was also informed a few Glasgow students traveled to Helena to watch the Special Olympians participate in United Basketball. These students had hoped to be a part of the games, but due to unforeseen circumstances it was not to be. However, they have talked to Mr. Rod Karst and the ball is rolling for next year. In fact, other students have approached Mr. Karst and informed him they want to be a part of the Glasgow contingent traveling to Helena for the United Basketball games.

Take the time to acknowledge the positive efforts Glasgow students display. Observe their zest of life and their willingness to go out of their comfort zone to help others, to join clubs, and to become active in competitions. Mr. Karst along with the staff at Glasgow High School give of their time to guide these students into new endeavors and to push them to reach goals they never dreamed would relate to their lives. These students meet the challenges and continue to amaze their teachers as well as the community of Glasgow, the outlying areas and the state of Montana.

Sincerely,

Brandy Howey
