Wind Frustrates Phillips in Lambert

Scotties Need to Step it Up

As if he didn't want to offend Mother Nature, Scottie head track and field coach described conditions at the Sidney Invitational as "less than ideal."

"It was pretty frustrating as far as information gathering goes," he explained. "It was so windy in Lambert we really couldn't get a true reading on where we are time-wise. We did learn a bit about competing in less than ideal conditions, and overall I thought we had a decent day. Overall, it's hard to say where we are at. We've had some pretty tough injuries and a lot of nagging soreness. And we worked pretty hard on Tuesday, so the kids were definitely tired - and it showed. It was a big meet, with four "A" schools and Williston's girls there."

Highlighting some of the Lady Scottie's performances, Phillips touched on Nora Neumiller and Iris McKean in their running events: "I thought Nora had a pretty good 200m. She's starting to move toward where I expected her to be. I think Iris learned some more lessons in the 800m - it's definitely become a more tactful race with the change to the waterfall start. She's learning each race, though, and I look for even better things from her as we get toward the tail end of the season. She ran a very good time in the 1600m considering the conditions."

For senior Ellie Page, Phillips said, "She is really starting to look smooth over the hurdles, and if we can keep her healthy, she should have a great rest of the year."

He was impressed with the mental fortitude of his throwers. "Brooklyn (Gustafson) had a big p.r. in the discus," he said. "And though they didn't set personal bests, I think Brennan Peters in the discus and Tehya Campbell in the javelin are starting to become tough competitors mentally. They didn't fold with the tough day, and had throws in the same range they've been."

Phillips also had praise for the jumpers as they had to battle the wind. "There was a tail wind for the girls long jump, but sometimes that doesn't help you because your mark is all off," he explained. "So I was pretty proud of our long jumpers: Tyann Graham, Abrianna Nielsen and Kambria Ross." He noted that the trio all achieved personal bests in the event and credited assistant coach Pat Menge with helping the girls adjust to the conditions.

"I also was proud of the girls 1600m relay," said Phillips. "We had some girls down with injury, and we got behind early. But they really showed some heart by running hard on their own."

According to Phillips, Koby Regalado set a big p.r. in the 200m and Jeremiah McCoy was just off his personal best despite the wind.

Glasgow ran two teams in the boys 1600m relay, placing one in seventh and one in ninth. "Tyler Fitzsimmons, Dylan Nieskens and Ellis McKean all had great legs," said Phillips, and of the seventh-place group he added, "It was a pretty strategic race. Lots of surging then slowing down into the wind, then surging with it again. Ellis broke it open into the wind on the back stretch to win it."

In the hurdles, Phillips is pleased with Fynn Sukut and his form, noting that the freshman just needs more time and strength to improve his time.

"We also ran Brett (Glaser) in the 100m, 200m and on the 4x4 (relay) to see how his foot would handle the load. The bone came through fine, but of course there's nothing between zero and 100 percent for Brett, so he blew through his leg of the 1600m relay. He was extremely muscle sore on Friday, but I think the foot is fine."

Discussing the boys throwing events, Phillips noted that Ben Miller had a pretty good 121 foot throw and Chevy Boos had a decent javelin throw of 130. "Competition was so tough there that they didn't crack the top five," he added. Tim Wageman and Stephen Bailey both set p.r.s in the pole vault and both Colton Pewitt and Sukut set p.r.s in the triple jump. "Alec Boland had a good long jump," said Phillips of the stand-out senior. "I think has found a home there."

Phillips did express some frustration with the team's lack of competitive spirit at the meet. "I was hoping for a little more from our kids'" he said. "We'll need to step it up if we want success in the post season. On paper right now, Malta isn't too far behind us at District for boys, and Fairfield is 30 points ahead of us at Divisional. If we can get healthy we might be okay, but I guess we'll see how the kids respond over the next few weeks. We've had a tradition of coming on strong in the post season in track, so I'm hopeful that trend will continue."

The Scottie Tracksters will be in Great Falls for the Fairfield/Belt meet on Saturday, April 27, then will host the Top Ten meet at Scottie Field on Tuesday, April 30.
