Qualifier Produces Several Personal Bests, Notable Performances

The Scottie Qualifier was held at Scottie Field on April 13. While it competed for participants with a few other meets scheduled for the same day, it still drew some good competition, including a team of boys from Williston.

Head coach Tim Phillips felt the Scotties had some pretty good efforts throughout the day, but indicated the weather may have caused some problems. "The wind was up a bit," he explained, "and I think, especially on the track, our athletes let that get into their heads and we didn't compete as well as we could have."

Highlighting some of the performances, Phillips discussed the boys first: "I loved the way Tyler Fitzsimmons closed in the 200m, beating one of Williston's finest at the line. Dexter Monson also had a very solid race. He always gives everything he has. In the distance races, we just didn't get out and compete at the level we have to at the end of the year. We don't need to be there now, but we gained some valuable lessons." Fitzsimmons led the boys in sprints, with second-place finishes in both the 100m and the 200m. He also ran a leg of the second-place short relay and the third-place long relay for the boys.

Phillips is looking forward to the Sidney Invitational coming up on Thursday, April 18. "I think Williston will be there, and I'm hoping our boys will be ready to run with them."

Continuing his summary of the boys' events, Phillips noted some more memorable efforts: "Carl Zabrocki set another p.r. despite the wind, and Dalton Sand had a very good 3200m debut. Both Ellis and Merlin ran a little faster than I expected in the 1600m relay."

For the throwers, Phillips said most had a really good day. Brett Glaser, Noah Lipszyc, Britt Fairclough and Jordan Billingsley all set a p.r. in the shot put. "In fact," said Phillips, "Jordan and Britt both had p.r.s in all three throws. And for the third year in a row, we threw Brett in a new event at the Qualifier, and for the third year in a row he won it. This year we tried the javelin, and he threw a stout 136' 4."

"Alec Boland looked pretty good in the high jump," he continued, "and Ted Tryan, Dawson Boland and Colter Cumber all had big p.r.s in the vault. Fynn Sukut got a p.r. in the triple jump, and Colten Fast had some really good jumps in the long."

For the girls, Nora Neumiller made a statement with her first appearance for the team, placing first in the 100m and fourth in the 200m as well as running a leg in each of the placing relays for the girls. "It was nice to see her make her debut," said Phillips of the freshman. "She's battled some early season injuries and we're hoping to get her full speed within the next couple weeks."

Touching on some of the other performances by the girls, he said, "Times were a little slow, but Iris (McKean) competed pretty well in the 800, and Ali Cunningham battled the entire race in the 1600. I thought Abrianna Nielsen had an excellent leg of the 1600m relay."

Nielsen and Tyann Graham both achieved p.r.s in the triple jump, and Tehya Campbell, Emma Page, Graham and Natosha Sand all set personal bests in the throwing events. Campbell, hit a 115' 11" toss in the javelin to snag second place and Brennan Peters placed in the top ten in all of her throwing events, including first place in the discus with a throw of 101' 01". "Riley Noser is starting to get healthy and her throws are showing it," said Phillips of the returning sophomore. "She won the shot at 34' 1.5", her best this year." In the pole vault, according to Phillips, Anika Peters just missed state qualifying height.

The Scottie tracksters will be in Lambert for the Sidney meet this Thursday, April 18. "It should be a pretty big meet, and I'm hoping we break out a bit on the track," said Phillips.

Other upcoming meets for the Scotties include a meet in Great Falls on Saturday, April 27, and the Top Ten meet in Glasgow on Tuesday, April 30.
