Municipal Seats Opening This Year:

Filing Begins April 18

Glasgow, Fort Peck, Nashua and Opheim are all scheduled to have municipal elections this upcoming election season and starting April 18, members of those towns can file to be placed on the ballot to fill the positions opening this year.

In Glasgow, the alderman/woman ward 1 seat, currently held by Nanci Schoenfelder, the alderman/woman ward 2 seat, currently held by Elvon "Butch" Heitman, and the alderman/woman ward 3 seat, currently held by Rod Karst, are available. Each ward seat has a four-year term limit and the filing fee to be placed on the ballot for either one of these seats is $48.60. To be eligible to hold one of these open positions, a person must be a resident for at least 60 days preceding the election to office of the ward electing the person or of an area that has been annexed by the city or town and placed in the ward.

In the town of Fort Peck, the mayor position, currently held by John Jones, and two alderman/woman positions, currently held by Kerry Aakre and Justin Schaff, are open. Each position has a four-year term limit. The filing fee to be placed on the ballot for mayor is $39 and the filing fee to run for alderman/woman is $15.

The towns of Nashua and Opehim both have two alderman/woman positions available, with each seat having a four-year term limit. In Nashua, Chad Reddick and Wes Miller are currently holding the seats while in Opheim Michael Robertson and Les Redfield are holding the positions.

In order to be eligible for a mayor or alderman/woman position in the towns, the qualifications include being a citizen of the United States and meeting the qualifications prescribed by law or ordinance adopted by the town. More information regarding qualifications can be obtained by Valley County Clerk and Recorder Taryn Stebleton.

The deadline to file for office is 5 p.m. on Monday, June 17, and as of press date only the municipal elections are scheduled to take place come election season. If there are filings for each town/city to fill these positions, a mail-in ballot will be sent to registered voters. Stebleton did point out that anytime between now and filing deadlines, city ordinances could be filed asking voters to pass, in addition to asking voters to choose city positions but as of press time no such filings have occurred.

For more information regarding these open positions, contact Valley County Clerk and Recorder Taryn Stebleton, 501 Court Square #2, Glasgow, 228-6226.
