Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Skate for a Cure Kicks Off Relay Season

Local law enforcement and first responders came out March 22 to raise funds for the local Relay For Life committee which has decided to initiate a "HOPE" (Help Others Pay Expenses) fund. The fund is intended to remain local and will be used to help all Valley County and neighbors with expenses resulting from accidents, emergencies and illnesses.

Skate for a Cure was back for its sixth year. Started as a way for the local Relay committee to "kick off" the fundraising season, this year's event brought out dozens from the local community to watch cops, firefighters and paramedics duke it out to raise funds for cancer survivors and research.

According to Relay Committee member Darla Larson, "Tami Burke invited us to be part of their last hockey event before the ice was eliminated from the VEC for the season. It worked well to get our organization information distributed and also have our first fundraiser of the year."

The event itself is free to the public and funds are raised through a 50/50 draw and duck toss, among other fundraisers. Larson said that although attendance was down this year, the fundraisers were "enthusiastically supported" by those who attended.

Hockey aside, the highlight for children in attendance was the duck toss. Larson explained that the game was played by purchasing a rubber duck and then during the second intermission everyone who bought a duck throws it on the ice. Whoever gets their duck closest to the middle, wins.

"The winner of the Duck Toss was Halli Hunter, whose throw knocked out her contender's duck from the center circle," said Larson. "Brianne Brunelle won the 50/50 ticket draw and donated her winnings back to the HOPE fund. A total of $223 was raised at Skate For A Cure to be given to the HOPE fund."

"We would like to thank Tami Burke and Del Hansen of Hi-Line Youth Hockey for the opportunity to be a part of this fun event while promoting HOPE (Helping Others Pay Expenses) medical relief fund," said Larson.
