Some Things Forgotten

I was doing a little early Spring housekeeping over the weekend, which resulted in digging through some things forgotten.

Do you remember when most homemakers treasured and displayed handiwork done by themselves or others? I remember almost every living room in homes of earlier days, displaying so many hand-crocheted items.

The one thought that came to mind were the doilies always found on the back and arms of the living room couch. Those of us that do remember immediately know what they were if we are to see a set today. These were usually a matching three piece hand-crocheted set. Most often there would be two oblong crocheted pieces that went on the arms of couches or those big old stuffed chairs. The third piece was used to decorate the back of said item. There were so many lovely doilies on most any flat surface, which often included the dining room table.

My grandmother knew that I loved them and gave me many. The down side of these lovely treasures is the hard work to keep them nice.

I have a hard time visualizing these hard working women starching and stretching these pieces. My thoughts of those days are that those were the kind of things homemakers were judged on. Those early days, men and women had set standards that they expected all to meet. Wow, what would our ancestors even think about the paper or plastic coverings we use today?
