Glasgow School Board Meets

Adding Ice Skating to Curriculum, School Election Discussed

The Glasgow School Board met in regular session on March 13 in the District Board Room. All trustees were present along with school administration, GEA representatives and district staff.

During the public comment period, Kim Girard explained to the board that there is a curriculum for ice skating in schools and advised that she would like to incorporate the curriculum after her retirement. She explained that she had already discussed the possibility with GMS principal Mike Zoanni, Hi-Line Youth Hockey and the middle school P.E. teacher, Joel Smith. Girard indicated that she would provide her time for free and she was looking at writing grants to pay for the ice time. “The only thing the school would be responsible for would be transportation of the students,” she added. She noted that Smith would likely be able to transport the students as he is qualified to drive bus for the district.

Girard did say that there is some liability involved and that parents would be required to give written approval for their child to participate. There would also be alternative activities for any students that did not want to participate.

At this time, Girard plans to begin by offering the class to the sixth-grade students, but hopes to expand it into other grade levels including the individual sports class at the high school. The school board consented to allow Girard to pursue the addition of the curriculum.

During the board comment period, trustee John Daggett wanted to clarify that the upcoming school election will be a polled election, not a mail-in election as previously indicated in The Glasgow Courier. Trustee Ryan Fast also utilized the board comment period to inform those present that there will be 78 teams in town for JJMT, held March 15 through 17, and noted that this is the biggest fundraiser for the Scottie Booster Club.

In recognition of their achievements, it was noted that Chevy Boos, Alec Boland and Keely Fossum were named to the honors basketball teams for District 2B, Micah Tweten and Dillon Godwin qualified for nationals in BPA, and Math Counts will be going to Butte March 16 to compete.

The board approved the following new hires: Kristina McGee, high school English: Keith Rux, transportation coordinator, Brian Chatten, janitor/housekeeper; and Michael Molzohn, substitute janitor.

The board also approved the following certified personnel for renewal: Shelby Qualls, LeeAnn Walls, Shanda Boreson, Jo-Ann Batulan, Veronica Caparas, Stephanie Peterson, Kristi Regalado, Jodi Griffin, Amy Capdeville, Audrey Flanagan, Jordan Dunlap, Patrick Barnett, Dani Grunzweig, Elizabeth Hoeksema, Julie Walsh, Jessica Lewis and Jennifer Cunningham.

Athletic and activities personnel: Brian Burleson, assistant softball coach; Bryan Krumwiede, Brittne Casterline, Chelsea Sams and Bobi Sugg, volunteer softball coaches.

Devin Rasmusan will transfer from the transportation coordinator position to substitute bus driver / janitor, and Jamie Hanshew will transfer from janitor / housekeeper at the high school to substitute janitor districtwide.

In closing of the personnel items, the board accepted the resignation of Audrey Kearns and the retirement of Brad Persinger.

At the request of Hinsdale English teacher Brenna Sundby, the board considered and approved a Speech & Drama cooperative with Hinsdale.

The board also approved to adopt the proposed SB 307 Permissive Levy Resolution and a request for a General Fund Mill Levy in the amount of $104,074 at the May 7 school election.

The board voted to adopt a number of policies, but pushed several to a second reading, partly due to a challenge by the GEA regarding those policies: #5220, #5231, #5231P, #5121 and #5223.

GEA representative Laurie Enebo and Trustee Mona Amundson will discuss and set a time for training and negotiation sessions sometime in April.

Bringing the meeting to a close, the student representative, each principal and the superintendent gave their reports, followed by approval of consent items. The meeting was adjourned and the next regular school board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, at 6 p.m., in the District Board room.
