Mildred I. (Waarvik) Long was born Aug. 29, 1926, on the John Baker farm in the Lustre community, Valley County of northeastern Montana, to Isak and Christine Waarvik. She went to her Lord on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019.
She attended the Cotton Wood and Success rural schools in the Ossette, Mont., community and graduated from Opheim High School in 1944. She attended Concordia College in Minnesota (1944-46).
After college, she taught at the Pleasant View School in Peerless, Mont .; Bjorklund School, north of Nashua, Mont .; first grade at Nashua School; Pleasant Valley School, north McCone County; and Oswego Grade School in Montana.
In 1952, she married Ralph D. Long in Wolf Point, Mont. Her son, Rocky, was born in 1958. She was a postal clerk at the Frazer, Mont., Post Office from 1954 to 1968. Mildred and Ralph moved to Bow, Wash., in 1968. She worked at Stokely Van Camp Inc. (1973-1980) and Twin City Foods. She and Ralph spent many hours taking care of their granddaughters, Christy and Jessica. She moved to Mt. Vernon, Wash., in 2000.
She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon. She enjoyed Bible Study and quilting. She was also a member of the Silver Run and Skagit Valley Granges (7th degree member), and the Skagit Valley Rovers Camp Club in Washington. She participated in the BNSF Railway Veterans Association. She was also very active in the Jolly Time Senior Dance at the Hillcrest Park Lodge in Mt. Vernon.
She was a member of Auxiliary VFW Post 933, Auxiliary VFW Post 5056 (Sedro Woolley, Wash.) and Sons of Norway, Abel Lodge (Conway, Wash.).
She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph (1994); parents Isak and Christine Waarvik; three brothers, Leroy, Raymond and Lincoln; and good friend Bob Rough.
She is survived by her son and daughter in-law, Rocky and Michele Long; two granddaughters, Christy (Sam Kushner) and Jessica Long; one brother, Wayne (Peggy) Waarvik; three nephews, Roger Waarvik, Daryl Waarvik and Wayne Waarvik Jr; two nieces, Karen Waarvik and Debbie Keating; plus many wonderful relatives in Montana.
