Remembering Winters

Do you remember the winters of 49-50, 50-51 and 64-65? Those are only the years that come to my mind and I do know there were many other winters etched in memory.

If you remember, I need go no further. For those who do not remember, let me help with some of those past winters. Do you remember driving from Point A to Point B along roads with snow banks higher than your car? Winds and snow so bad that you had small snow drifts along the base boards inside your house. Ice on top of the water bucket (your source of household water) that was broken before you could make your morning coffee.

I know of students that spent the night in school as buses could not travel, or maybe they had a “snow home” where they could stay with friends. Occasionally, the snow and wind was bad enough, children formed a chain (and in hand) being led by adults, to spend the night in a home close to the school.

If you are female, you remember having to wear pants under your dress to stay warm while you made your way to school. Child or adult, you never left home in the winter without making sure you had warm clothes along, scarves, gloves, overshoes and pants. Of course, today we tend to get a little careless as we always have that trusty cell phone along.

Just a word from an “oldie” it is always wise to be prepared! May your travels be safe.
