Scotties Finish in Top Ten at CMR Holiday Wrestling Classic

The Scottie matmen competed at the CMR Holiday Wrestling Classic in Great Falls Dec. 14 and 15, following a stop in Fort Benton for a warm-up JV mixer on Dec. 12.

The varsity Scotties held their own at the tough CMR tournament, placing 10th behind Colstrip and eight Class AA schools. Although the boys performed well, head coach Jory Casterline knows they can do better. "We wrestled better than we did the week before," he explained, "But we lost some matches that we should have won, some by just a point or two." He was pleased by their performance overall, however, and said, "Everybody gave good effort."

Part of the problem, according to Casterline, is that the wrestlers give up too many points early in their matches, then have to battle back to regain the upper hand. "They get flipped on their backs in the first period and give up those points. We are going to work on preventing that with some defensive drills during practice. They also have to keep grinding. Sometimes they get past the first period and realize they can beat the guy they are on the mat with and that's when they really start trying. They've gotta do that for the whole six minutes."

The Scotties will be hosting Poplar and Malta on Friday, Dec. 21, then will be on the road to Sidney on Saturday, Dec. 22 for another tough tournament. "Glendive was supposed to be here Friday," explained Casterline, "But they backed out. We'll have some good matches with Poplar and Malta, but I fully expect to win against both of them."
