Scottie Harriers Sweep in Harlem, Missoula Bound

The Scottie cross country team finished up their regular season of competition at the Harlem Invitational on Oct. 13. With a clean sweep of the meet for both the boys and girls, it was a nice way to end the season.

Although both teams performed well, a change in the venue may have affected their overall performance. The course was originally set to be held in Harlem, but had to be moved to Ft. Belknap due to muddy conditions.

Alaina Sallee, a senior on the team, was mildly disappointed in her performance at the event and referenced the difference in the courses. "I didn't do as well as I normally do," she explained. "We had to run on pavement and it kind of hurt my shins. Plus, the course was a lot of rolling hills."

Sallee, who is advancing to the state meet in Missoula, finished tenth overall for the Glasgow girls, with four other runners cracking the top ten for the day. Iris McKean led the way followed by Emily Kolstad, Ali Cunningham and Lauren Padden.

The boys had six runners finish in the top ten led by Wilson Overby. Completing the top ten for the Scottie boys were Ike Braaten, Ellis McKean, Merlin McKean, Colin Jamba and Dameon Erb.

Colton Pewitt, another senior on the squad, placed twelfth overall for the boys and will also be headed to the state meet this weekend. When asked about his performance at the Harlem Invitational, he echoed Sallee's thoughts on the day. "I didn't do as well as I expected," he explained. "But it wasn't bad."

The Scotties head to Missoula for the big show this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 20. Representing GHS will be Sallee, Overby, Braaten, I. McKean, Kolstad, M. McKean, E. McKean, Jamba, Carl Zabrocki, Padden, Brooke Westby, Erb, Pewitt, Colter Barnett, Cunningham, Katie Kaiser and Alexus Nistler.

Sallee said she feels physically prepared for the event, but needs to remind herself to remain positive. "Cross country takes a lot of mental strength," she explained. "That's something I've struggled with, and I have to focus on staying positive and just giving it my all."

Pewitt also feels ready for the race. "I just need to focus on how I need to run to do well," he noted. When asked about the potential affect the change in altitude may have on the team, Pewitt dismissed it as a factor for himself. "I think it's something we need to be thinking about, but I'm not too worried about it."

The post-season race will be held at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula with the classes scheduled to run as follows:
