Scotties Sweep Frazer XC Invitational

Girls Fall to Second Behind Williston at Homecoming Meet

Glasgow continues to dominate the cross country circuit, and the team only seems to be gaining ground. The Scotties ran in Frazer on Sept. 27 and at their Homecoming meet in Fort Peck on Sept. 29. The boys were able to claim first place at both events while the girls won in Frazer, but fell to Williston in Fort Peck.

The course in Frazer definitely has its challenges for the runners, but is a fan favorite. From the spectator's vantage point, a substantial stretch of the Missouri River is the backdrop for the course. Arguably, the most challenging section of the course for the competitors is a formidable hill situated about halfway through the race. "We don't look forward to it at all," said Merlin McKean of the course.

Some runners thrive in those conditions, however. The Scottie girls placed five runners in the top ten, and the boys had three finish in the top ten. Iris McKean led the way for the Lady Scotties, placing second overall. Rounding out the top ten were Ali Cunningham, Emily Kolstad, Lauren Padden and Alaina Sallee. Taking the top spot more than a minute ahead of McKean was Trista Stingley of Riverton, Wyo. in 19:29. Stingley is the granddaughter of the late Terry Zeiger.

For the varsity boys, Wilson Overby outran everybody and grabbed gold for the day in 16:21. Ike Braaten and M. McKean cracked the top ten to join Overby at the finish.

At the Scottie Invitational meet held in Fort Peck, it was more of the same with McKean and Overby leading their squads to the chute. Kolstad, Cunningham and Padden finished in the top ten again for the girls while Braaten and M. McKean were joined by Ellis McKean in the top ten for the boys.

The varsity runners will be heading to Helena for the annual Capital City 7 of 7 meet on Thursday, Oct. 4. The event is a favorite for both Cunningham and M. McKean. "The course actually sucks," said McKean of the event, "It's pretty hilly. But the atmosphere is so different there. It's fun." Cunningham confirmed the sentiment. "It's fun because you get to run with a boy. You don't get to do that at any other meet." McKean also notes that because runners are not competing alongside their teammates, a different strategy has to be used. "We can't use our teammates to pace ourselves, and we are running with the top performers," he explained.

As the regular season comes to a close, the Scotties will begin to focus on the state meet that will be held in Missoula on Saturday, Oct. 20. Getting ready for the post-season event is all in the details, according to M. McKean. "We'll start to pay more attention to what we eat, make sure we are getting enough sleep. Things like that," he explained. Cunningham will deal with the stress of the event by reaching out to her dad. "He's a huge supporter of me and a big part of why I enjoy running," she said. "He ran all through high school and college, so when I get nervous, he just talks to me and calms me down."

Before making the trip to Missoula, however, the Scotties will have to finish out the regular season with meets in Miles City on Saturday, Oct. 6 and in Harlem on Friday, Oct. 12.
