Civics, Chickens and Change

The Refreshing Side of Peck-Yes

Regardless of how you feel about having chickens in town, there is no denying that Madelyn House has taken an issue she is passionate about and engaged the community in a positive and impactful way. I think the result of that labor was on full display at Monday night's city council meeting where over a dozen people showed to support the initiative and express their opinions to their governing body.

In the end, House’s initiative and supporters managed to move the ordinance, which allows chickens in city limits, to move forward to a first reading. Which, as I understand it means everyone will have an opportunity at the Aug. 20 city council meeting to express their support or opposition to the change to the long standing prohibition.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I fully support chickens in city limits, I expressed my own concerns to our esteemed elected officials on Monday, but what I am saying is that I am impressed by the initiative shown by House to take on change in such a positive and enlightening way. I feel it is refreshing that instead of wallowing in the reality of her situation she took on the challenge to influence her surroundings for what she believes is the betterment of our community. What’s more is she also managed to rally others to support her cause, going so far as to convince them to attend a city council meeting, which is not the most riveting of theatre for those of you who are unfamiliar.

So I think Madelyn is an example for all of us to emulate. I believe that if more people sought to make change happen rather than just complaining about their circumstances then we could possibly get more done for our community and our posterity. With that being said I would like to thank Madelyn for her efforts to be positive and her thoroughness in supporting her views on allowing chickens in city limits. I also want to encourage everyone who has an opinion on the matter to come to the Monday, Aug. 20, city council meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the civic center.
