Remembering Dement Beach

Does anyone remember Dement Beach, which was located about 12 miles northeast of Opheim and 8 miles north of Glentana? Having spent most of my teen years in this area it is mind boggling to me that there was actually a swimming resort, or bath resort, in that area. I was fortunate to be given a panoramic picture of this unbelievable resort taken in the 1930s.

There are a number of vehicles lining the bank. It was noted that there was not a single one of them that supported the present day rounded top. Of course there were many patrons in their swimming attire out in the water. There is even a boat on the water. Much to my amazement there were several water slides. I thought that was a newer addition to swim resorts, but not many of us got to recreate at Dement Beach to see just how progressive the recreation world was in that era.

Next time you enjoy your outing at Fort Peck, give a brief thought to recreation areas of the past. Those things from the past can be quite an eye opener for many of us.
