Scottie Athletes Recognized at End-of-Year Banquet

Coaching Great Dan Freund Keynote Speaker

The Scottie Booster Club's annual all-sports banquet was held in the St. Raphael's gymnasium on May 29.

The purpose of the event was to honor and award student athletes of GHS and recognize their outstanding achievements. A complimentary meal was provided by the Booster Club for the nearly 300 athletes, parents and fans in attendance.

This year's keynote speaker was Scottie coaching legend Dan Freund. Beginning in 1957, Freund spent 19 years in the Glasgow school system as a teacher and a coach. During his time with the Scotties, he was the head coach for football, cross country, boys basketball and track. Eventually, he served as the athletic director.

He led the Scottie boys track team to eight Eastern A Divisional Championships and six Class A State Championships. He also engineered the 1970 Eastern A Boys Basketball title, one of only four in school history, and led the Scottie boys cross country team to their only state team title in 1967. In addition, he kick-started the legendary run of the Scottie girls cross country program at GHS, winning three straight State A team titles from 1973 to 1975.

Deservedly, Freund was elected to the Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1983.

In his address to the crowd, Freund highlighted some of his years at GHS and offered some advice to the athletes in attendance. His pride in being a Scottie was evident as he reflected on his experiences in Glasgow, at one point saying, "I am proud to say I was a Scottie coach," and described the high school as a beautiful facility. "It's more beautiful today than when it was built," he stated.

Looking back on some of his earlier days at GHS, Freund discussed some of the most outstanding athletes he had the opportunity to work with and watch succeed. Without a doubt, one of the most successful and dominant competitor to come out of Glasgow was Roy Robinson, a multi-sport athlete that holds records in Scottie track and field to this day. Freund also noted accomplishments by Ted Schye, Doug Allie and Joe Etchart, among others, sharing anecdotes with the audience. "You can't have success in athletics without a lot of hard work, determination and intestinal fortitude," he stressed, noting that although Robinson was very talented, he was also a very hard worker.

Freund emphasized that every team member is important in the success of a team. "You don't have to be a starting athlete to play an important role on the team," he explained. "By doing your very best in practices and working hard, you can push your teammates to be their best, too. You have to practice your best to play your best."

He told the crowd that the best predictor of success, however you define success, is being an athlete, and advocated that students participate in multiple sports. "Sports compliment each other," he said. "In athletics, you learn values like pride, sportsmanship, cooperation, humility and teamwork."

In conclusion of his address, Freund offered these heartfelt words: "Over the years, I have learned that Montana people are great, eastern Montana people are a cut above that, and Glasgow people are a cut above them all."

Following Freund's speech, the GHS coaches were each given an opportunity to discuss their seasons and present certificates and awards to their athletes. Making presentations were: Jorand Marlenee, cheer; Rod Karst, cross country; Somer Hoerster, volleyball; Greg Liebelt, football; Norm Braaten, boys basketball; Travis Nielsen, girls basketball; Jory Casterline, wrestling; Brittne Casterline, softball; Dave Riggin, golf; and Tim Phillips, track and field.
