Unshelved: GCCL Summer Reading

I am so excited about the theme for this year’s summer reading program, “Libraries Rock!” Besides books, I love music, so to be able to combine the two is going to make an amazing summer reading program.

The program this year starts on June 18, and goes until July 23. Even though it’s still a few weeks away, we have been getting some questions regarding the program, so I’m going to do my best to answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

Q. When can we sign up for the summer reading program?

A. You can sign up on our website, http://www.glasgowlibrary.org starting Monday, June 11, or at the library on Monday, June 18.

Q. Is the program just reading?

A. No, we do have reading logs but we also have activity sheets for ages 0 – 12. We also have special programs on Tuesdays at 2 p.m., for ages 7-12 and will continue to do story time on Thursdays at 10 a.m., for ages 0-6. On occasion, we may have a special program that we will announce or different ways for you to earn extra chances to win prizes in the library.

Q. How long do we have to read each day?

A. We understand that it is summer and people are busy so we let you choose your reading goal. That may be 10 minutes a day or an hour a day. Set a realistic goal, so it is achievable. Each day you reach your goal will be a chance for you to enter to win prizes.

Q. What if we don’t finish all of the activity sheets/reading logs?

A. We don’t require you to finish everything to win prizes, but if you want to be entered into the grand prize drawing, you do need to finish all activity sheets and reading logs. There are five activity sheets and five reading logs for each age group, one for each week. Basically, the more you finish the more chances you have to win prizes.

Q. Is the program just for younger kids?

A. No, we also have an adult program. When you sign up you will receive a Bingo sheet with different genres to read. When you get a bingo, you can bring the sheet into the library and get entered into a prize drawing at a party that we will have on Tuesday, July 31, just for adults. We will also have one teen event during the summer that we will announce on our website and Facebook; watch for more details on that event.

All participants that sign up will receive a calendar with the events and programs that we have scheduled. You can go to our website http://www.glasgowlibrary.org or check out our Facebook page or give us a call at 228-2731 to find information as all programs are subject to change.

We look forward to seeing you all this summer at the library.
