Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Supporting the Thin Blue Line on Peace Officer Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 15, was National Peace Officer Memorial Day, and last week in Bozeman two officers, Trooper David DeLaittre and Deputy Mason Moore, were honored for the sacrifice they paid to this state. I will say from what little experience I have, it is not often someone thanks a police officer or sheriff deputy for any of the services they provide.

Sure, it is easy to recall the negative encounters many of us have had with law enforcement, but far greater are the times they set out to help those in need. But, we made the laws and asked them to enforce them and keep the peace. I will say I have seen some poor examples of policing in this world and Valley County and Glasgow are not among them. The level of dedication these brave men and women have to this town is unparalleled. I would add that their professionalism and accountability are equally unmatched.

In thinking of our law enforcement officers, I can’t help but think of the missing children, the victims of violent crimes, burglary or assault. The abused children and special victims whose only support, help or saving grace came in the form of a peace officer.

Considering the risk to life, limb and sanity the job puts on the individual, I cannot imagine taking up the charge and keeping watch. So I will say that I, personally, am thankful to all those who have kept watch, are keeping watch and who will keep watch over Valley County on this Peace Officer Memorial Day and every other day of the year.
