Library Benefits All Ages

This week is National Library Week and I can not say enough about the benefits our City-County library provides to my family and me.

Because of their wide variety of children books, we are able to have family story-time with our two young kids before bed. We have developed a nightly routine, where before putting them to bed, we all gather on the living room couch, and read. After a long busy day, it allows all of us to settle down, spend time together, enter a different world and learn about new environments.

I find myself walking into the library on a weekly basis to replenish story-time books as well as find a good read for myself. I have found new interesting authors and books that I wouldn’t have learned about otherwise if it wasn’t for browsing the many shelves of the library.

We have borrowed cookbooks to find ways to mix up our nightly dinners and have found recipe gems that are now always in rotation. We have found fix-it-up books to provide insights on how to renovate our home. We have been able to view the latest movie releases from the comfort of our home by borrowing DVDs. We have checked out magazines instead of spending the money on a subscription.

Sometimes, there is a particular book or movie the library doesn’t have on hand, and our local librarians work extra hard to obtain it through other area libraries so we can enjoy them.

We have participated in programs the library offers such as weekly story-time for children and the Summer Reading Program, which allows kids of all ages to stay engaged and learn during the summer months. Other programs they offer are Tech Nights and Lego Club among many others.

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved the library and the books. There was never a book that I couldn’t get my hands on. I literally kept a notebook filled with books I wanted to check-out and read. As I have grown up, and technology has evolved, this list is now electronic.

I attribute my love of books to my parents bringing me to story-time and spending many days browsing books, movies, magazines, and resources. I hope to pass along this love an fascination of books to my children.

The librarians are an array of knowledge and information. The books held on the shelves of the library can bring you to a different world, let you escape from the stresses of life while also teaching you new skills and abilities. Even with the digital age of the internet, there is nothing like walking into your local library, sitting down, picking up a book and reading.
