Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

County Filings, Open Positions

Government may seem like a dirty word around here. And with so much turmoil in today's politics, it can seem like it is too much to keep up with. Even if you have given up on our national government, don't forget about your state and local elections. These elections aren't as exciting as the national ones, but in many ways, they are more important. These offices have a direct impact on our lives and are vital to the smooth operation of our cities and counties.

Jan. 11 was the first day to file for a nomination and the first round of paperwork for local elections have been received. Incumbents and newcomers have submitted their forms, in hopes of securing a place in our local government. Incumbents Brenda Anderson (treasurer) and Dylan Jensen (county attorney) are officially running for re-election. With no current opponent and plenty of experience, they are likely to be shoo-ins. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle will not be seeking election, and current VCSO undersheriff Luke Strommen has filed for his bid at the job.

Lynne Nyquist (clerk and recorder) will also be stepping down. Her deputy, Taryn Stebleton, is running for the job in her first election. Rumors are floating about an opponent, but no official paperwork has been filed.

Even with few opponents in the mix, things could get interesting. Registration for nomination doesn't end until March 12, so opponents for any of these offices can still surface. Official candidates now have a bit of a head start. To curb any opposition, they must seize this opportunity to gain a foothold.

First-time candidates Stebleton and Strommen will have to work harder than others to gain recognition with area voters. Strommen is well known in the community and was recently recognized for his accomplishments in the war on drugs. Maintaining his presence and demeanor in the community will be vital to his success. Stebleton has plenty of experience and comes with a recommendation from Nyquist, but her lack of name recognition may hurt her if an opponent emerges.

The most challenging part of elections is getting people to vote. Too often, people are either apathetic or ill-informed. Both can be conquered with information. It is up to the candidates to excite voters and inform them in order to win. The elections and primaries are held on June 5 for state and local. If you still need to register to vote, please go to the Clerk and Recorder's Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Courthouse Square downtown. You can request an absentee ballot, register to vote, or update your voter information. Make sure to talk to Stebleton while you are there and ask about her campaign. I'll be interviewing her in coming weeks.

Our republic is built by votes, and Glasgow isn't any different. Help shape the future. Get out and vote.
