January 17, 2018

Marie H. (Nelson) Hobby, 82, died on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, in Atlanta, Ga.

A memorial service and interment will be held in Glasgow, Mont. at a later date.

She was the daughter of Ralph and Mabel Nelson, born on Dec. 5, 1935, in Glasgow. She graduated from Glasgow High School and began work at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital. She was primarily a homemaker but also worked with her family at various restaurants, and again with the hospital in purchasing.

She enjoyed many years with her large extended and immediate family-she was the oldest of 10 siblings. She enjoyed picnics with family, fishing, trap shooting, boating at Fort Peck Lake and spending time with friends.

She married Arvid Hobby on April 28, 1956, in Glasgow, and had one daughter, Sandra. As a mother, she kept busy helping at her daughter's school and attending the school performances of her daughter and many nieces and nephews. She and Arvid always had a pot of coffee on and enjoyed hosting their friends and happy hours. Outside the house, they enjoyed traveling with friends, taking trips to Las Vegas, bowling and playing bingo.

After living in Glasgow for 40 years, she and Arvid moved to Kennesaw, Ga., in 1996, where she became actively involved with her grandsons. She attended many of their events – whether that be Boy Scouts or sports, band or high school football; she was always there.

She was a member of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Marietta, and, after Arvid passed away in 2003, she became an active member in the Widow's Web ministry. She was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, through wins and losses, watching nearly every game of every season. She attended several Braves games, Atlanta Falcons games, and many Georgia Tech football games. To top it off, she saw Neil Diamond in concert a few years ago. Aside from weekly visits to friends in a retirement community, she also played cards at the East Cobb Senior Center. She made good friends in Georgia and touched many lives. All will remember her as a sweet and kind person who loved her family and friends, the Braves, and believed that every dog needed a treat.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arvid Hobby; her parents, Ralph Nelson and Mabel Nelson Masters; five sisters, Donna Rennick, Helen Blanchard, Masha Smith, Sharon Anderson and Julie Severeid; and four brothers, George, Buddy, Brent and Ralph Nelson.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Richards and her husband, Ron; and two grandsons, Stephen, his wife, Nora, and Andrew Richards.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at Transfiguration Catholic Church in Marietta on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a,m, with Father Fred Wendel officiating. A visitation was held at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta on Monday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with a prayer service following at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on her behalf to: St. Vincent DePaul Society, 1815 Blackwell Rd. Marietta, Ga. 30066.
