Three Games, Three Wins, Three-Peat: Lady Scotties District Champs!

The GHS Scottie volleyball team are three-peat District Champs! In direct contrast to many of the past teams, this year's group experienced no mid-tournament slump, no early loss forcing them to play with a monkey on their back. Instead, they took care of business in an efficient manner and emerged as champions in as few matches as possible.

GHS first matched up with Harlem at 1 p.m. on Oct. 27, and swept the Lady Wildcats in three games: 25-12, 25-10, 25-13. With some of the best passing of the season, the Scotties were able to take more risks and experiment with their offense, keeping Harlem guessing which player would receive the set. The strategy proved successful, despite the attempts of a hard-working Harlem team.

In the first match against the Wolf Point Wolves on Friday afternoon, GHS overcame some serving woes with dogged determination. Once again the passing was outstanding, allowing for a diverse offense that continued to create chaos on the other side. An impressive Wolf Point block required a huge array of GHS hitters to be successful and they delivered, foiling both blockers and defensive players with a myriad of shots. Three Glasgow players racked up 10 kills each (Jesi Kennedy, Baylie Chappell, Hannah Mickelson) thanks to the fine setting of Rachelle Glaser (32 assists) while three other Glasgow players chalked up double digit digs (Madison Knodel 11, Cordelia Nickels 11, Kennedy Schmidt 10). The win was a fantastic team victory that situated the Scotties in the championship match on Saturday.

At 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, for the championship match vs. the Wolves, the Scotties came ready to play. With fearless enthusiasm, both teams battled back and forth for the duration of the five game match, and the scores reflected the effort, 25-19, 25-27, 25-27, 25-23, 15-7. Glasgow knew to win they'd have to bring their A-game and play at a blistering pace once more and the offense was ready to deliver. Glaser dished out an astonishing 49 assists and this time five Scotties benefitted and proved they were a force to be reckoned with: Kennedy (16 kills), Keely Fossum (11 kills), Chappell (10 kills), Schmidt (10 kills) and Mickelson (10 kills). Ziggy Chamberlain had an unprecedented five kills out of the back row. Passing and defense continued to be spot on as the following players excelled in that area: Schmidt (13 digs), Nickels (9 digs) and Chamberlain (8 digs).

Divisionals are up next for this team that never stops trying and looks to be peaking at just the right time of the season.

The divisional tournament will be held in Malta Thursday - Saturday, Nov. 2-4. Glasgow begins their quest for hardware with a 3:15 p.m. game vs. Shelby.
