Swim Team Pitches in to Ready City Pool

Swim Camp Kicks Off 2017 Season

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) a.ka. "The Thunder" is ready for another season in the sun.

Prior to even getting in the water, swim team representatives were on hand to give the city pool its annual makeover.

John Kulczyk, Ann Kulczyk, Melani Vandall and Michelle Huntsman, all parents of Thunder swimmers, spent one weekend prepping the pool to be filled.

The work included spraying the pool with a sealant prior to painting and some minor repairs.

This year, the swim team also purchased new lane ropes and a new pace clock with funds awarded from the Valley County Combined Campaign.

With the pool sporting a bit of a facelift, GKST held a swim camp June 2-4 to kick off the season. The camp was presented by Jerry Lusk who arrived at the pool with an impressive resume:

*1972- 1976: head club coach Elmendorf Dolfins AAU/USS Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage AK

*1972-1984: Started and became head high school coach: Dimond High School, Anchorage, AK

*1974-2016: Owner and operator of All American Athletics, Inc. Over the past 42 years, we have operated competitive swim clinics and camps in nine states.

*1976-1982: senior club coach Aurora Swim Team, Anchorage, AK

*1985-1998: head high school coach, Chugiak High School, Chugiak, AK

*1985-1992: head club coach KNIK/NEAT Swim Clubs, Chugiak, AK

*1998 – 2015: Founded and was head club coach for FAST, Ladysmith, WI

*2003-Present: Started and became head high school coach, Trident Swim Team (three-school co-op) Ladysmith, WI

On-hand for the three-day camp, which had a big emphasis on technique, were 27 area swimmers.

A. Kulczyk, who is a GKST board member, described the camp as "phenomenal" and pointed out that the Thunder's current head coach, Nicole Arnold, learned from Lusk, which means her coaching techniques match up with what was being presented at the camp.

Kulczyk also noted that with Lusk heading into retirement, the camp held this past weekend was his last. "He started with swim camps here in Glasgow years ago," she explained, "and finished with them here as well."
