Lady Scotties Fall to Mission at State Softball Tourney

Expectations for the Scottie Softball team were high. The girls practically sailed through their regular season with most of their games ending in mercy rule scores.

They traveled to Frenchtown for the state tournament May 25-27 with a state title in their sights, and as far as any Scottie fans were concerned, they were the favorites to win it all. The Lady Scotties, however, eventually fell to the team from Mission/Arlee/Charlo (MAC) twice to get knocked out of the tournament.

"The outcome in the state tournament wasn't, of course, what we were looking for," said head coach Gil Johnson, "but the girls played hard and battled every game they played in Frenchtown. If we could have gotten a couple of breaks, we would have been right in there."

Their first game of the tournament began at 2 p.m. on Thursday, and became their first loss. The match-up against the Bulldogs was a good one and the Scotties played hard. Although they were behind in the contest following a four-run inning by MAC, they battled until the end and nearly accomplished a late-game rally, mostly inspired by a three-run home run in the top of the seventh by Khloe Krumwiede.

The Bulldogs brought the game to an end, however, denying even a game-tying run in the final inning.

The loss sent them to a loser-out game against Shepherd at noon the following day. Ashtyn Myrick was a key player in the contest with her solo home run in the fourth inning and winning the game on the mound. The Scotties prevailed 3-2 and got set to play Huntley Project at 2 p.m., the same day. Huntley Project came into the contest as the only team to defeat the Lady Scotties prior to the state competition.

Glasgow finally showed them what they were made of, however, as they shut down the Red Devils with a quick 13-1 win. Kennedy Schmidt was hot at the plate, knocking one out of the park in the second inning to boost Glasgow's lead over H.P. to 9-0, and recording two runs and three RBIs. The Red Devils were finally able to score a run in the top of the fourth inning, but it would be the only one. The Scotties effectively shut them down for the remainder of the contest and claimed the win, which sent Glasgow into their second game against MAC at 4 p.m.

Other than a short burst of runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, much of the game was dry. The Lady Scotties earned two runs in the top of the fifth inning only for the Bulldogs to answer with four of their own. The teams traded runs into the seventh inning when Tyra Johnson cleared the bases with a double to tie the game 6-6, sending the contest into extra innings. Many extra innings.

The Scotties battled hard with some incredible defensive plays to fend off the Bulldogs. Notably, Schmidt shut down the eighth inning with a diving catch and a flip-toss to first base for the final out.

The game continued, scoreless, into the bottom of the 11th inning when the Bulldogs brought in their final run to win the game and send the Scotties home. Coach Johnson expressed his pride in the girls he worked with all season. "This is a great group of girls and it was a pleasure to be able to be part of a team with so much talent, drive and a will not to give up," he said. "I don't think I've ever been around a group of girls that are as tough as this bunch." He added that they should be proud of how tough they played in Frenchtown, especially in the 11-inning game against Mission/Arlee/Charlo. "I feel that game should go down in Scottie lore as one of the best games ever played," he said.

In conclusion, Johnson said the girls had a great season. "They broke many long-standing team and individual Scottie softball records, and many of them will have their names on the Scottie record board," he explained. "The team had seven girls selected for the all-state and all conference teams (four first-team all state selections and three second-team all conference selections).
