Negative Ads, Mother's Day, A Bit of Advice

It’s a bits and pieces week again.

I hope all the mothers in our area had a really nice Mother’s Day. I was fotunate to have three of my children with me, five of my grandchildren, and to receive a phone call from my fourth child. Besides my children, we also had some special guests, including one of my daughter-in-law's mother, join us for dinner.

Besides celebrating Mother’s Day, the day also included an early birthday celebration for my husband. So it was a grand day indeed.

For quite a while now, the Great Falls television stations have carried a plethora of negative political ads from two candidates for the upcoming election of a new House of Representative member from Montana. Quite frankly, I’m extremely disgusted with and tired of them. I’ve seen next to nothing of a positive nature in the ads.

In several of the ads, even a positive statement has carried a derogatory undertone.

Hearing each candidate tell the public what they hope they can accomplish in Congress to actually help Montanans would be much more informative, not to mention refreshing.

And where are the television ads from a third candidate for this national office? Is their cost too prohibitive for him?

But regardless of everything, it’s important for all who can to vote.

It’s that time of year high school students are beginning to look for summer jobs. It’s a great way for young people to not only earn money but to build on their skills and begin to form their resumes.

A bit of advice.

If you had a job last summer that you liked, try to return to that place of employment. Provided you performed your duties well, you most likely will be successful in getting hired. One of the worst things you can do is job hop. In doing that you show a lack of commitment.

Realize that there is always going to be someone you won’t like wherever you work. That’s just a part of being employed. Find a way to work around the situation in a peaceable way. For all you know, that one person may be dealing with difficult issues at home or school or with another person. Cutting that co-worker some slack and simply being kind to them may be all that’s needed to make a difference.

Be on time for your shift. And be dependable. Employers do not want to have to call you to see if you’re going to show up for work. Dress appropriately. Be clean. Maintaining a polite and cheerful attitude will help you tremendously.

Know that getting time off is not a given. If you have a reason you need time off, discuss it well ahead of time with your employer. And if you are told you can’t get the time off, be accepting of the decision and thank your employer for listening to your request.

To all the graduates in the upcoming weeks, may you be successful in whatever you are pursuing whether it be continuing your education or beginning a career.
