Scottie Grapplers Battle Tough Opponents in Bismarck

Cowboy Classic Up Next

After going 11-4 in Poplar Jan. 3, the Scottie grapplers competed in the Bismarck Rotary Tournament Jan. 6 and 7. It was Glasgow's first showing at the two-day tournament, which provided the Scotties an opportunity to wrestle against some new competition.

It also provided the Scotties with some experience at a larger venue. "It's not like wrestling in a high school gym," explained head coach Jory Casterline. "It's more like wrestling in our state tournament at the Metra. There are eight mats on the floor and it's a tough tournament."

"We want to go out and find the tough competitions," he continued. "We are always looking for the wins, but we don't want to wrestle the same kids every weekend."

With a big tournament like the one in Bismarck, Casterline said he's less concerned about overall team results. "We just work on wrestling as individuals and getting some wrestling in," he said.

The tournament is a seeded tournament, and because the Scotties don't typically wrestle in North Dakota, only one member of the team went in seeded for the event. "Matt Reyling went in seeded fourth," said Casterline. "None of the other kids could be seeded, so we were behind the eight ball a little bit."

The boys had some successes, however small they may have seemed. Almost every wrestler came home with at least one win. Casterline explained that some of the wrestlers defeated in the early rounds had the opportunity to wrestle in the JV tournament. "John Cremer got second overall in that," he said. Casterline noted that the team had two unseeded freshmen, Cale Swanson and Kaden Zimmerman, come within one match of placing in the tournament. "That's huge," he said, adding that he was happy with the weekend overall.

The Scotties are scheduled to compete in the Cowboy Invitational Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14 in Miles City. It's another tough tournament with wrestlers from four states expected to attend.
