Esther Sorenson

Esther (Niehoff) Sorenson, 100, of Glasgow, Mont., passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at Valley View Home in Glasgow.

A rosary will be recited Friday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Glasgow. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church with Father Jose Valliparambil officiating, followed by burial at the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow. A luncheon will follow the burial.

She was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Glentana, Mont., to William and Mary (Suek) Niehoff. She attended school in Glentana and graduated in 1934 from Opheim High School. She earned her teaching degree from the College of Great Falls, where she was also in the first graduating class. She taught school for 40 years in Glentana, Richland, Opheim, Libby, Scobey, Kalispell and Glasgow.

She married Clifford Halvorson in December 1943. Clifford passed away in April of 1945. She later married Lloyd Sorenson in January 1956. The couple made their home in Glentana for a few years before moving to Glasgow in 1961.

She was a member of St. Raphael's and Retired Teachers. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and traveling. She was also known as a good cook.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Clifford Halvorson and Lloyd Sorenson; her parents, William "Bill" and Mary Niehoff; two sisters, Julie Niehoff and Leona O'Brien; and one niece, Elaine O'Brien-Kling.

Survivors include four nieces, Kathleen Hilbig and her husband, Ron, of Great Falls, Margaret Pollington and her husband, Kenny, of Helena, Joan O'Donnell of Helena and Suzanne Bloomquist of Spokane; two nephews, Walt Niehoff Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Seattle and Bill Niehoff and his wife, Debbie, of Helena; a brother, Walter Niehoff of Helena; three step-children, Harold Sorenson, Marjorie Tankin and Linda Gruver; and special neighbors, friends and caretakers, Norm and Kim Girard.
