A Bit of Everything

Have you had the honor of being tagged as the family member that has everything?  If you have I know that you can justify it easily. Do you remember when your kids came home needing a school project done by the next morning?  That presents a problem even today, but yesterday you couldn’t go to the internet for information, or run uptown for whatever you might need, especially if you got informed of this after 5:00 p.m.  BUT if you were lucky, you did know someone that might have what you needed.  Books, everyone kept books and magazines because a trip to the library could be a 10-50 mile trip, and they did provide something for you to do if you had down time.  Or maybe it wasn’t the kids that needed something.  If you are rural, as most everyone was in the past, you know how many runs to town are made for minor parts and supplies.  If you saved everything and spent a half day rummaging through your treasures, you probably found something that would work for you without spending that time going to town. Moms and grandmas spent many evening hours salvaging buttons and zippers from outgrown or worn out garments. All of that saved “stuff” gives us a chuckle today, but it saved the day for many of our parents and grandparents. I have come to the conclusion that most of this saving of items was not entirely due to the fact it saved money, but went hand in hand with how convenient it was to get the needed item.  Next time you order online and get overnight or two day delivery, give just a tiny thought as to how our lives have changed over the years.
