Law Enforcement Brief: DUI Patrols, Wreck on Hwy 24

The Valley County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone that law enforcement agencies will be stepping up DUI patrols through the first of the new year. DUI Task Force Coordinator Deputy Chris Richter told the Courier, "We hope that knowing we have extra officers on the roads will be an added incentive to plan for a sober ride home."

Sheriff Vernon Buerkle also asked to remind readers that Valley County Search & Rescue will be providing rides to revelers during New Year festivities. The DUI Task Force will be donating $15 per ride, up to $500, to support Search & Rescue efforts.

The Montana Highway Patrol's Sgt. Jeffrey Kent investigated the scene of a crash near Glasgow on Dec. 19. The crash occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 18, on Hwy 24 near the bend between Glasgow and Fort Peck. The vehicle, a 2001 Subaru Forester, was driven by Kevan Perez, 25, of Colorado. According to Sgt. Kent, "The vehicle was traveling south on MT 24 and went off the right side of the roadway and into the ditch."

"The vehicle," he added, "then began traveling northbound in the ditch and struck the culvert and overturned onto its side."

Valley County Sheriff's deputies Alex Esteves and Chris Richter responded and arrested the driver. Charges remain unclear at press time, but alcohol appears to be a factor. Anyone with information about the wreck should call 406-653-6708.
