Tricks and Treats

Do you remember the Halloweens of your early years? The years before you could purchase a “cool” trendy Halloween costume and had to come up with your own ideas?

Some kids didn’t have a mother that was into sewing and arts and crafty stuff, so it was not uncommon to see a lot of ghost costumes. However, if you were one of the lucky ones, you had a mother or grandma that would come up with some really clever costume ideas.

It was always fun to attend the school Halloween parties (this happened in country schools anyway) and see all the neat ideas the kids and parents came up with. And the decorations were not things that you purchased in the stores. I have no idea when Halloween decorations became so commercial, but I remember things like lots of corn stalks, home grown pumpkins and gourds, skeletons made out of the rolls from wax paper or tin foil and painted to look like bones. Sometimes stuffed dummies and caskets, and my list could go on and on.

I might not remember the holiday correctly, but I would imagine it was Halloween when it was quite common for rural people to be busy pulling a prank on a neighbor that left his residence unattended that night. I think that overturning outhouses was quite common and fun if you didn’t happen to be inside. Watch for the spooks and goblins that will be out that night!
