On Sowing Notions

I get The Glasgow Courier here in Casper, and I read your “Green Spaces in Rural Places” faithfully.

I tried your pie crust (that didn’t need to be rolled out) made in the first apple pie recipe with crumb topping. It turned out exactly as you said. It was a very flaky crust and it cooked over into a baking sheet just like you said. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your contributions.

I am enjoying it here. We have a little garden in containers and have enjoyed tomatoes, green peppers, strawberries, plus some herbs – rosemary, chives, parsley, etc. - plus lots of flowers.

Every [one] is so friendly here and I acquired a great family too. My son, Gary, lives in a suburb nearby, so it’s been a good move, but I do miss the Glasgow area and look forward to the Courier each week.

On T and HRC

After the media released the very offensive word and conversation by Donald Trump, there has been so many who were shocked by his words and yet, I hear men, women and children using the F.... word, which speaks of the sexual act, using this word continually. Teachers have said that many school students have a vocabulary that is very unfitting and even worse.

I believe it is time to quit focusing on this 11 years ago comment and focus on the platforms that these two candidates represent. Donald Trump is not afraid to call terrorism for what it is. He is against abortion, same-sex marriage, open borders and for making America great again. He has been endorsed by many prominent Christian leaders who understand that there is forgiveness for wrongs of the past.

I guess I am one of the “deplorables” that Hillary called us. I will stand for America and for the values given to us in God’s Word.

Elections

Please permit a brief commentary on local, State, and Federal elections. I have favored the “right” side most of my adult life, served as an elected precinct officer and convention delegate, volunteered on numerous campaigns and contributed thousands of dollars to candidates of my chosen party, until the winds of fortune blew me into a remote non-partisan political gulag on the prairie. I don’t have a Hi-line phone book pedigree or blue chip stock portfolio, and therefore would have difficulty delivering a single precinct to a candidate. Given the tendency of my generally favored party’s officials to back down at the Federal level and the apparently narrow bench that our State candidates play musical chairs on, becoming political hacks just trying for a spot at the trough, my little wallet has gone flat.

Now if you will further indulge my feeble-minded thoughts on local elections, especially the county commissioner race:

The “odds-on” favorite is, in my opinion, the retired Bureau of Land Management official playing up his heritage on his yard signs and campaign paraphernalia. Personally, I see no advantage to electing this candidate in a county with over a million acres of Federal land, but I guess that’s farm politics; “Get Washington off my back and hurry up with my subsidy check.”

Next, there’s the retired police officer who ran for sheriff last time around. At that time I was new here, was in a politically anti-incumbent frame of mind, and made his acquaintance on the street. In full disclosure, I made a token contribution to that campaign. I have only met the current sheriff twice, once at a luncheon for our current congressman (a subject for another letter) and once at the liquor store when we were both stocking up. No malice at the ballot box should be deduced in a non-partisan environment.

Finally, a warm and fuzzy and oh-so-good word for my personal voting preference, a gentleman running a low key, underfunded campaign who holds elected office currently as a public administrator. He has served on the county planning board and is an ambulance volunteer EMT, among other public spirited endeavors. He has displayed the initiative to work his way up through the courthouse system and operations, has operated his own business enterprises, and holds private sector employment. He impresses me as being more civic minded than merely seeking employment as an officeholder.

Last but not least, in the presidential race, I’ll take my chances with a possible detour toward corporate fascism rather than outright socialism or communism. For reasons editorially unprintable I will vote for whoever the “L” is running for governor and congress.
